S13E31 Where Would You Haunt?: Doc Gruesome and Dark Corner Haunted House

This week we’re joined by Holly Spahr and Jack Karczewski from Dark Corner Haunt and our musical guest is dark hip hop artist Doc Gruesome!
Holly and Jack tell us all about their over the top, two level haunted house that starts this weekend and runs through October 31st at the National Bowling Stadium in downtown Reno. Take the little ones to Adeline farms pumpkin patch, but for the bigs, the Dark Corner Haunt is the ticket. High quality Halloween entertainment is what they offer. Darkcornerhaunt.com for details.

Our musical guest is a horror/dark rapper, mixing up genres like metal and goth with hip hop, sampling bands like the Deftones, creating sounds reminiscent of Sisters of Mercy, with a horror aesthetic ala Slipknot, keeping the songs fresh and original. It’s Doc Gruesome!
Doc is hard working with a vision and drive. He is headlining a big show Sunday, October 15 with Warlord Colossus LIVE! at CYPRESS in the heart of MIDTOWN Reno Nevada. (ALL AGES)
We had a blast getting pumped up and ready for a month of spookiness and horror. Our favorite time of the year for sure. You can find Doc Gruesome all over the usual platforms on the internet including Bandcamp.

A great three-way battle for the prize and bragging rights, was fought during the worst little quiz and Chewie is concerned about the pet population in the north valleys.
Life is short and we love you.
Thanks for listening.
S13E30 Donkey Jaw, the Reverend and Renoites

This week we were joined by our podfather himself, Thee Reverend Rory Dowd, as well as Connor McQuivey , host of popular local podcast Renoites! Our musical guests are the kickass, pop punks Donkey Jaw.

Newish members, Jared on bass and Sean on guitar, were an absolute pleasure to get to know. Find out how they hooked up with two of our favorite musicians in town,
Zack on guitar and lead vocals and the mighty Kodeus on drums.

We’ve had them on since the old Dogwater One days, twelve years ago, when they were The Let Downs. They were great then and are absolute rippers now.
We find out the biblical origins of their name, hear a bunch of live tunes, and laugh a lot.

Connor was good company as well, telling us all about his journey and mission in podcasting. He too is archiving the unique and interesting stories of, well, as he aptly titled his show, RENOites. Shout out to the Sparks Railroad Museum Podcast! Whoop whoop!

It is very rare these days, but always special to have the OG WLP cast all together. Thank you for making it happen this week Rev. Rory. Namaste.
Life is short and we love you.
Thanks for listening!
S13E29 ÜLTRA: All About That Bass

This week is a banger episode with hardcore punk rockers ÜLTRA. Jacob McCoy on bass and vocals, and Taylor Sommer on drums and backup vocals.
Their sound is like thrashy, heavy skate punk with a vocal style reminiscent of Al Jorgensen. With themes ranging from suffering to bird watching.

They’re aggressive, trippy, a little dark and totally alive with energy.
Just a couple years old, they’re keeping busy and are looking forward to a bunch of upcoming shows including STRESS FEST, a new hardcore music festival created by Jacob.

Also joining us is our resident movie reviewer and co host in training Sophia Shortz! She enlightens us with her take on the Barbenheimer phenomenon, both films she hasn’t seen of course…

And, from Chewies vault, we get a song by Reno ska legends, The Mudsharks, from a never opened cassette tape of 1994’s Cracking Porcelain.

Lots of tunes this week and even a quick round of the worst little quiz!
Life is short and we love you.
Thanks for listening.
Two Man Lemmon Band – Lemmon Party

This week we welcome the ever-evolving Two Man Lemmon Band!
Spencer Eldridge started out solo with his guitar and some songs under the banner Just In Beaver. That was followed by being joined on bass by Grimedog’s Lucas Grimes. Then after a name change to the current, Two Man Lemmon Band are now joined by Bobby Enzenberger (OG bassist for Pussy Velour) on cello, filling out their fun brand of folk punk.

With funny parody songs ranging from crapping your britches at the Meadowood Mall to a rap number to songs of empathy and unity, Two Man Lemmon Band are great tight musicians with a fun-loving energy that’s contagious. We of course initiate Bobby with a round of the worst little quiz.

Look them up on the book of faces or hipstergram for information on their next shows including a festival in Doyle, California with Filependejo and many others. You can also catch them at the Marianarchy fest in October. Spencer, Lucas and Bobby, we salute you!

Life is short and we love you.
Thanks for listening.
Charlie Marks – Old Timey Folker

This week’s guest hails from the woods halfway to Susanville, slinging guitar and banjo ditties from the early nineteenth century – our new bestie, Charlie Marks!
Down to earth, with a fascination for the finger picking styles from a time just before Appalachian bluegrass, when folks played traditional porch music, Charlie intends to keep this art form alive by performing and celebrating it on his upcoming northwest and national tour.

This being his first time on the show we play a fun round of the Worst Little Quiz,. Plus, Ian is back with his picks of upcoming hot shows.
You can find Charlie Marks on instagram with tour info and upcoming dates in Reno.
Thanks for listening!
Alfredo – Building Impermanence – S13 E19

And we’re back!
It was great meeting our new best friend Just Alfredo and his solo guitar looping instrumentals. Another member of the Spike McGuire army, he’s been tearing it up all over 4th street and at 10 Torr’s open mics and showcases.

Alfredo’s layered guitar constructions are sometimes reminiscent of spaghetti western music, surf, classical and psychedelic rock like Pink Floyd or The Mermen. We were fascinated with the process. Watching one person create all that sound is always intriguing.

Having survived the pandemic and honing his craft, Alfredo is out and about creating music in several circles. He love’s collaboration and keeps very busy as an arborist as well! He’s playing this Friday , colabbing with the fantastic Haley Sawtell at the aforementioned 10 Torr on Mill Street at Atomik City!
Fun talk, fun quiz and great music.

We hope to see y’all rocking at Debauch-A-Reno this weekend in Wingfield Park. ALL AGES! Kids under 10 are free! Visit Kadillac Kim at the Reno Punk Rock Flea Market booth and pick up a WLP t-shirt and ask about sponsor opportunities!
Life is short and we love you.
Thanks for listening.
Sticker Guy! and Debauch-a-Reno: A Birthday Story

We have a fun and exciting show this week. If you’ve ever needed to order stickers, you may have heard of our guest: all the way from Reno, NV and points beyond – The Sticker Guy! himself, Mr. Peter Menchetti. Coming up in the punk scene of Reno in the 80s and 90s with a strong DIY ethic, Menchetti has been promoting and producing music in some form or another for almost four decades. He brings a stack of vinyl and a portable turntable to play us some rock and roll goodness. Joining Menchetti in-studio are his partner Eunice and Pussy Velour’s Wolfgang and Quinn!

This year marks the 30th anniversary of his launch of Sticker Guy! and to celebrate, Menchetti has pooled together his contacts from his record label (Slovenly Recordings – celebrating 21 years) and festival production company (We’re Loud Fest) to put on the fifth installment of Debauch-a-Reno! This time, the punks are taking over Wingfield park for the weekend, starting on Friday 6/16 at 5pm with (friend-of-the-show) DJ Staxofwax! The all-ages festival will be held between Wingfield Park during the day and evening with afterparties at The Cypress. The lineup is intense, featuring 20+ acts The Mummies, The Kids, The Zeroes, Deadbolt, along with locals Eddie and the Subtitles, The Juvinals, Pussy Velour, a DJ set from Jello Biafra and more! There will be merch, sponsor booths, and food available at the park as well. The FAQ page has all the details and links – limited tickets are still available!

Reverend Rory is in to host this week and we also get a visit from everyone’s favorite junior intern, RaggMopp. Plus, we introduce our NEWEST intern: LEE! We see big things for Lee in the futurely, Lee. Lee leelee lee. Talked about some other events, but the show is out late this week, so we hope you had fun, whatever you did.

Thanks for Listening.
Ryan Stark – Putting the ‘No’ in ‘Reno’ – S13 E17

Hey, friends! Reverend Rory is back this week and is pleased as peaches to welcome to the show one of his and Dogwater Dick’s oldest friends and collaborators, Ryan Stark. A Reno native, Ryan has been involved with the underground and performing arts scenes of Reno for quite some time. He is also the proprietor of No City City Roasters, a wonderful outfit that also has a location in the top of the Great Basin Food Coop – and it’s legit. As long as The Rev has known Ryan, the tall man in black has always has a passionate opinion on coffee.

Stark brings a few original songs that he plays live for us, as well as a track from his band-on-hiatus, DIffidence. We talk about old Reno a bit – the Java Jungle and FSU days, basement shows and late night coffee. Chewie also comes through with a Reno connection on tape – Real Rivals, comprised of Reno emigres living in Seattle and recorded at that F.S.U. location in 2005.

We of course end up with an event round up – including Nick Ramirez and Eric Foreman at the Canvas Café, 11a – 1p on 06/10 in Virginia City and ALSO the RPRFM Clown Car Wash on the same day at Shanty Dolans and the Keystone Car Wash!
NULYPHE and Willie Puchert – We Are Community – S13 E12

This weeks theme is community: We are stoked to catch up with hip hop artist N.U.L.Y.P.H.E. and hear his most triumphant story starting from his last appearance on WLP, just one year ago. On a mission to teach hip hop and pay homage to the pioneers, N.U.L.Y.P.H.E.’s journey has led him to real support from the community and realizing his dream. It’s a great ride. He also provided today’s beats and live performance. We’re grateful for him and his work.

We also have dear friend and local icon, Willie Puchert. Willie grew up in Reno so we do get a bit nostalgic, reminiscing the biggest little city in the 80’s. Willie is also of the President of the Board of Directors of The Sons and Daughters of Erin (SADOE), a Irish/Celtic community group and cultural organization here in Reno. SADOE is reviving their annual festival in a different iteration and are unveiling a new Celtic music event coming up: Northern Nevada Celtic Ceilidh (pron. kay-lee), complete with fiddles, mandolins, harps, bagpipes, and everything! Listen or follow the link for details.

Speaking of celebrations: Kadillac Kim has of course turned her 40th birthday hootenanny into a fundraiser for Family Soup, a community non-profit out there feeding hungry people. The event is at 40 Mile Saloon on Wednesday April 19th featuring Kelly Proud, Rigorous Proof, Josiah Knight, and (the highly sexual) Grimedog! $5 bux at the door.

We have a quiz and dish the 411 on some great local shows.
Life is short and we love you.

All The Way To Slutzville! – S13 E10

Welcome back dear listeners. We close out Women’s March with a kick and bang! It’s the OG punk sounds of our good friends, Slutzville. We had a blast with Jesse (guitar vox) and Nat (drums vox). Slutzville’s origins are discussed as well as a bunch of upcoming shows. They’re on a mission to get as many shows booked as possible.

If you need fast tight hardcore punk songs with humor and angst , not to mention how fricking cool they are as people, contact them to book for July , September and beyond.
Making it over the hill just to be on our show is above and beyond (and they brought gifts!) ,we can’t thank them enough for a ripping episode. (So happy weather didn’t keep them away again! -ed.) No quiz, they’re WLP vets now.

We do a little weekend recap featuring Kim and the Punk Rock Prom . Plus we talk about poop a little too much, maybe. Back to our roots! Put it in your ear!
