This week we’re back with our good friend and musical storyteller Breck Lee Durham. Also we welcome Carson City Shorts film festival organizers Lyric and Taylor of Silver State Storytellers. They’re giving us the scoop on their upcoming sci-fi short film fest and competition Moon Rocks, where film makers create science fiction films between 5-9 minutes running time. Find them at nvstorytellers.org and on Instagram @loverboy_lyric @carsoncityshorts @nvstorytellers.

Lyric
Taylor

Breck Lee Durham has been playing guitar, singing and recording a lot these days , receiving a recording grant from the Nevada Art Council, both solo and with his band Trouble Show. We hear some songs from both projects.

Breck with a live performance for our Patreon show

Breck has a boomy voice and a great sense of humor. When the songs are serious, they are quite touching as well. It’s no wonder Breck recently organized a John Prine tribute show, Prine’s lyrical sensibilities are very similar to Breck’s work. A mixture of folk, blues and southern rock but not limited to one style or sound.

We had a bunch of laughs hanging out with our awesome guests and you will too. You can find Breck on Facebook and Instagram @breckleemusic. Life is short and we love you. Thanks for listening.

S15E14-Secret Monolith: Meet the Other Bigfoot

Some of our favorite players in Reno, from bands Alphabet Cult, the Shames, Plastic Caves, gob, Scurvy Bastards and others, joined us for this weeks episode.

They’re currently the band known as Secret Monolith, Cyril sings and shreds guitar, Leah sings and slays the bass and Darren pounds the shit out of the drums. Their chemistry is fantastic and it makes sense, they’ve played together in several projects for years and friends for decades.

Darren
Leah
Cyril

Their sound is like mixing some Sabbath, a dash of Pavement, a little Weezer, a bit of Pink Floyd, a pinch of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and a smidge of Sonic Youth for a totally original, exciting and fresh sound. Powerful and playful.

Their debut album Other Bigfoot is epic, eclectic and a little trippy. A super fun journey with songs inspired from youth, the powers that be and Sasquatch. Recorded by Reno punk rock legend Zac Damon, Secret Monolith sound amazing.

on clear vinyl!
Kim checks out the album

Kadillac Kim gives us the weekend hot shows and Patrick joins in on hosting duties.

It was great to catch up with old friends who continue to create excellent work.

Thanks Secret Monolith and thank you dear listeners.

Life is short and we love you.

 The kids are alright!

Mason

Full of rebellion and music for a messed up world. Death metal is their main genre but you can hear classic metal influences as well.

With some battle of the bands under their belt and some tight performances opening shows, the band is ready to take on the west coast metal scene.

We love having young bands on the show. The pure joy and love of the process and performance is contagious. All the obstacles and practice it takes to get to the stage are worth the effort, for the love of music, metal or otherwise.

We go a little free stylee this week and interview at the beginning and have live music towards the end. No quiz either. Probably for the best.

We enjoyed our first interview with Buthchered finding them to be funny, smart and entertaining and we look forward to following the progress of the band and see where these young guns go from here. Keep on rocking dudes.

Life is short and we love you.

Thanks for listening.

We had the great heavy metal rockers Weight of the Tide on our humble podcast and they didn’t disappoint. Mark Moots’ heavy guitar and powerful vocals, Marcus Mayhall’s superb bass, Jason Thomas’ masterful drums and absent from the show, Jes Phipps also on guitar and vocals, provided us tracks from their latest album What Pale Victory, and it rips.

Mark

Jason
What Pale Victory out now!

Prog metal heads with passion and precision. We talk about the groups life and journey in music. They are so pure metal that in 2018 they were invited to the UK for the “number one” heavy metal festival; Bloodstock! That year legendary bands like Judas Priest and Gojira headlined a stacked lineup. WotT really are Reno metal giants who couldn’t be more humble, with statements like “it’s just heavy metal it’s not rocket science“ and “it takes a lot of work to be mediocre”. They’re not. They understand, navigate and execute the metal like it’s second nature, hell I’d say like it’s FIRST nature!

Their songs are like epic metal mini movies for your third ear. The shortest song is 5 minutes long, the others are 7-9 minutes of twists and turns and glorious metal with bite like Pantera but cosmic exploration like Queensryche or Coheed and Cambria.

So come along and enter the other worldly sounds of Weight of the Tide, shred and soar!

The quiz is played and we have another rare hosting appearance by Thee Reverend Rory Dowd!

REV!

Horns up! Stank face! Thrash and shred until you’re dead!

After all, life is short and we love you.

Thanks for listening.

WLP’s Women’s March continues with a true blast from the past.

We’re back with female fronted bands for Women’s March!

We have Korey Davis on drums, Chris Retallack bass, Michael Retallack & Nathan Retallack on guitars and on vocals and occasional instruments, Keely Nesbit! They are “It’s Not Cute Anymore” based in Reno and Portola California.

Keely
Korey

The band was recently formed and have played a few shows as a unit. They’re all in multiple bands and have been making music since they were kids.

Michael, Nathan and Chris are brothers from California and Korey and Keely are a couple from Reno.

Chris
Micheal
Nathan

They make the commute to rehearsal every week and have written some great alternative rock songs.

We check out their tunes, discuss another band at great lengths, get their backstory and what they plan for the future. We play the quiz and it gets tangential as usual.

We had a blast with this very talented and interesting group. They have a modern sound with retro tones, tight musicianship and a powerful front woman with a great voice. Definitely worth checking out.

It’s Not Cute Anymore & Nick

To keep up with It’s Not Cute Anymore follow them on Instagram.

We love hearing new exciting bands and we were not disappointed this week.

We’re back! Celebrate ladies March with us as we welcome back for her third appearance the sultry songstress of the high desert, Gina Rose Waller.

Gina Rose Waller

With a punk rock spirit and a soft approach, angelic whispers to an almost howl, her songs will break your heart, question life’s purpose, opine on outlaws and a wild heart. Sort of like she’s Lucinda Williams and Cat Powers cousin in music. Dogwater Dick calls it music to play for a sleeping baby. Lullaby western folk songs? Country Chillcore? However you define it, Gina puts a spell on you and gets you to listen closely and hopefully feel.

Faint of Heart is her new album to be released this year with tunes with and for sensitive vulnerability. She is a great artist expressing the deepest feelings and emotions.

Gina’s music might be solemn at times, but she is a laugh riot, and we all love her company.

Gina likes clowns

We play a great round of the worst little quiz and Patrick returns to the cohost chair.

Pat, Gina, Nick after the show

Another fantastic woman for our fabulous women’s March celebration! Ladies we salute you! We honor you and thank you for all your contributions to the biggest little music scene.

Thanks for listening.

This week we have the hilarious, sweet sassy sounds of punk drummer singer songwriter Cori Elba with Layla Moheimani on bass and Rob Elba, Cori’s dad, on guitar.

Cori’s comes to Reno from Truckee Ca, Layla too. Rob originally from Queens, now in L.A. California.

Cori

Cori began performing at the Alibi open mic in Truckee and Z bar in Reno’s every Monday.

Rob is a punk pioneer with his old New York band the Holy Terrors. You can see his pride in his daughter’s accomplishments.

Cori, Layla and Rob

Cori’s music is like new school riot girrl vibes, funny, angry and adorable. Stories from Cori’s life and perspective. Rob and Layla are totally perfect on the strings for these simple but raw punk teen angst anthems by a gal with a lot to say. These quick story songs are a kick in the pants music and art need, a go for it spirit.

She met Layla in Truckee also performing at the open mic and they were kismet. Layla is a sound engineer which has been very helpful to the band. Layla plays several instruments and loves what she’s doing.

Being in an airline family they’re able to fly places for rehearsal, gigs and our podcast! Thanks for making the trip, Rob!

We were happy they could make it to Dogwater for another great live episode of WLP.

Cori Elba is on the internet and has cd’s etc. Google her!

Patrick takes over for Dogwater Dick who called in sick. great job Pat!

S15E06 Sweet Decay- Rabbit Light Tapestry

How sweet it is to be back with indie folk duo Sweet Decay.

CJ plays guitar and he and Autumn both sing in a beautiful powerhouse harmony.

CJ
Autumn

They’re having a blast as Sweet Decay and since they are a couple they can easily practice write and riff together often. They approach songwriting with diligence and whimsy often picking 3 random nouns and running with whatever may come before refining a song.  Just keep going.

They take the journey they’re on very seriously and would expand the band with strings and mandolin if they found people who who fit and were seriously down to work hard and often.

Both are strong solo performers but together they elevate the music and the vibe.

You can find them on Instagram @sweet.decaymusic ,YouTube and  most streaming platforms.

We play a super fun quiz and Patrick joins Nick and Rick as a co host for the first time.

We had a sweet time with Sweet Decay and you will too.

Life is short and we love you.
