Choogin, baybay, choogin!
I am so conflicted about this episode!!!! First, we have the cast from “Tooth of Crime” on, which is so awesome; second, Jamie hosted the show in its entirety, which is good and bad
(good that she can handle it, bat that my job is at stake now); and finally – it’s the last episode ever from beautiful suburban Sparks! What is this world coming to?!?!
“Tooth of Crime” is a play written, and then later re-written, by Sam Sheppard. It involves live music, cars and fire. It is dangerous theater. It is a play that has not always been well received. It is a play that may have never been done correctly, even when directed by the author. A small group of actors from Reno believe that they can pull it off like no one has.
Director Dave Richards brings most of his cast and the band to the studio with him to talk about the upcoming performances. He is joined by Lew Zaumeyer (Hoss), Jill Marlene (Becky Lou), Scott Dundas (Chaser), Andy Luna (Crow), Nick Ramirez (Meera), Rory Dowd (Rudio Ran) from the cast and also Jeff Done, Pat Mayfield, Dave Masud and Chris Fox from the Reno “Tooth of Crime” band. For a last session, we crammed so many people in that the whole band AND Reverend Rory had to sit in the living room! That’s why Jamie got to host the show! (I knew you were wondering)
If you’re interested in seeing the show, Tickets are for sale at Jub Jub’s, The Melting Pot and online.
For a final episode at the old house, we couldn’t have asked for a better set of guests – some old friends, some brand new to the show. ANd we had fun. We will be taking a one week hiatus so Dogwater Dick can move ye olde studios into Reno! Crazy things are afoot in the neighborhood. Chekkit what’s been happening down the block:

Put on your fancy clothes and dancin’ shoes!
I took the week off, so I’m not really here. Reverend Rory had another birthday this week and blew off the show to spend it with his ladies (homemade cheesecake and ravioli!). We all wish he never comes back has another great trip around the sun! In studio, coming through at the 11th hour, we have The Jenny and jeff Show (capitalization intended)! Good friends of the show, Jeff Done (Walk of Shame, Stevedave, Fall Silent) and Jenny Pez DeSpencer (Reno Tahoe Comedy, Knitting Factory, 3rd Street Bar) come by to hang out, and by hang out we mean, Jenny takes over the show with out the Rev, to reign her in with his own oversized ego.
(Since I wasn’t on teh show, I don’t really know what happenend yet and I’m going to listen tomorrow with you, so I’m going to focus on)
MARIANARCHY WINTER BALL 2014 – A BENEFIT FOR GREG ALLEN
As you all know, the podcast is intrinsically involved with Marianarchy Reno, an organization Nick Ramirez started many years ago to benefit Reno artists in need and the art community in general, in memory of Marianne Psota. This year, our Winter Ball will be going to benefit Greg Allen, the legendary Reno painter, photographer and artist. After declining health for some time, Greg has let it be known that he has congestive heart failure. As a long-time friend of all of us at WLP, and espeically Nick and Marianne, it was inevitable that Marianarchy Reno step up to help a brother out.
This year’s festivities will feature 37 local bands over two days – Friday 12/12 and Saturday 12/13 – as well as performances by local comedians an art auction and much more. According to the Mistress of Prizes, Risky Burn, “We are going to have a massive orgy of items for you to win! We want this to be a successful fundraiser so that Greg Allen cannot only be deliciously bathed in your melodic hugs, but raise some monies to be useful for him, allowing him to concentrate on his health. So save some bones and let us relieve you of your cash while distracting you with art, gift certificates, bar tabs, and more.”
Also, Nick plays some tunes and New Girl takes a spin in the chair again.
Well, I have to go rehearse for the show – Playing in Princess Bombs and Lighter Theif – but I expect to see you there. Another big thanks to Jenny and Jeff for coming in to hang out with Nick and New Girl.
Thanks for Listening,

Hey Kids! How’s it going out there in the real world? That bad? Well, pull up a stool and listen to to some powerful depressin’ songs by this week’s guest, Myke Read, and feel better about yourself. Myke is better known for playing with the Infecto Skeletons, but recently he’s made a venture into the world of country music, acoustic guitars and prison songs. Chekkout how purty Myke Read sings.
Also in studio is Jenny PezDespencer, talking about her upcoming comedy show at Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor. She will be recording a live album at this show, so it’s going to be a lot of fun! Listen in for the BIG CONTEST to win tickets to this live comedy album recording of Jenny PezDespencer, one of our favorite Reno comics.
Jeff Done, bright eyed and bushy tailed, hangs out with us during the show too. It’s good to see Jeff.
We3 also have a brief phone call with next week’s guests, Dan Harmann and Ky Alfred Hillig. Both hail from Washington and will be playing at St. James Infirmary on Monday 5/19, just after coming onto the podcast to record with us! Fun guys on the phone, we can’t wait to hang out and give them the Worst Little Quiz next week – they’ll have no idea
(unless they read this. which they won’t.) Take a sec to chekkout their music ans stop by the show!
Finally, lets not forget about this weekend – MARIANARCHY X – Friday, May 16th and Saturday May 17th. 30+ bands in two days! We’ve been raising money for 10 years to help out our Reno family and artists and non-profits, in honor of the late Marianne Psota, with huge support from the community. THis year’s beneficiaries are Keely Davis, a little girl with Down’s Syndrome, and Emily Reese, Reno teacher and personality on the Reno Tahoe Tonight Show on Nevada Matters and Renegade Radio, who was recently diagnosed with cancer after already having beaten it into submission. As we say around Maryanarchy, “Fuck Your Cancer!”, and now “Fuck Your Syndrome” joins the catalogue of Jub-isms. It is going to be another great show this year. Please come out and help us make a difference in someone’s life, once again.

It all started so normally at first…
This week gets a little crazy. Rory forgot his phone, Nick left early and things get extra NSFW. But of course they do: Kevin Dunn stopped by. One of the foulest songwriters in town Kevin has verbally vomited for tons of Reno bands including Dump Your Boyfriends, Courtesy Stitch, STM and a brief but exciting career as a rapper. We’ve got his ‘version’ of The Rainbow Connection with MC P-Hole on the episode and let me tell you – I don’t remember Kermit saying a damn one of those lyrics! Childhood memories ruined….
Also in the studio is Dan Steinmetz, a long-time drummer on the Reno scene who is currently
herding Kevin drumming for STM. He brings the rock and the solid. We unfortunately didn’t get to talk to Dan as much as we wanted – Kevin had a lot to say. There may have been some shit talking going on… Especially after the bottle of citrus vodka he cradled like a baby.
We did miss an opportunity to talk to a mover and shaker though – there was supposed to be a phoner with DJ Heidilicious, but someone forgot his phone. We’ll have Heidi on in about a month, but until then, here’s a ‘short list of her upcoming shows:
- Thurs 9/13- Live streaming of a DJ collective called Reno Sound Collective – https://www.facebook.com/events/108418002644167/
- Fri 9/14- Crystal Bay Club, Tahoe, Late Night w Roksmyth
- Sat 9/15- Reno ArtBeat at the new Salvagery on Wrondel- fundraiser for Future Kind, local charity futurekind.org- provides underprivileged communities around the world help with educational resources. BBQ and local music showcase of interesting local bands, and also educating the community some conscious and cultural styles of electronic music. meet and greet for the artists, etc. will be showing films various types of music and have local art as well. AND full plate of food!
- 9/21- play at HOME at the new Rise nightclub downtown
- 9/22- 90s party at Seven in West Street Market- games, costume contests etc
Oh – and we didn’t talk about it on the show, but right before, during the ‘preshow’, we found a dead mouse in the backyard. Rory sat down near it and must have bumped it because when we looked it was moving a lot and then about 15 maggots came swarming out. There are only 3 in the picture, but there were lots more that ran. SOOOOO fucking creepy!
And thanks for listening!
No really – we totally offended him on this episode!
So, I’m a little drunk and blazed as I write this. More so than usual. I kinda forgot what day it was and that I needed to put this up – kinda lost track with visiting the hospital and stuff. On that note, thank you Reno for being such a kick ass town! We have raised over $4,000 for Kelly Proud while she is laid up in the ICU. Fuck your mystery ailment, Stitch! We miss you!
Anyway, I would like to proudly announce that in this episode we actually offend Jeff Done. Listen for it! He even says so. We take a little journey back through his musical career, From ‘Pennies’ to ‘Tiny Private Dancer’, which is featured in the upcoming Reno movie, Nowhere Nevada. Jeff might come off like a slobbering bulldog, but he is a pretty damn good songwriter, singer and lyricist. Who’da thunk that this punk Reno thug would keep being this talented!?! During the podcast we talk a bunch about Ty Fritzsching, former lead guitar for Stevedave; the Stevedave, Dump Your Boyfriends and Dale Kellams show over the weekend; and a whole lot of other mildly offensive things. We learn a lot of revealing things about Jeff an Lydia during the Worst Little Quiz when the gloves come off!
We were actually supposed to have all of Stevedave on the show, but everybody forgot, so we just got Jeff… OK… So really, I’m drunk and just want to get this done. lots of cool stuff this weekend – listen and find out, bitches!
Thanks for Listening!
