They’re here talking about their new EP recorded by our own former intern Ian Laughlin (contact him here if you’re interested in recording with him!). Listen up as Nick tries to keep us all under control and for some grungy, good old-fashioned rock and roll.

O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!

In an episode that can arguably be called our most interesting episode yet, we welcome Felipendejo to the Worst Little Podcast this week. brainchild of Kevin Montoya (Ostracized), this is a singular musical experience – the fabled one-man band. Kevin brings the rock, and the funk, and the minimalism, and the art rock, and the noise in a cacophony of mental stimulation and limbering.

smiling crazily

Kevin Montoya

Kevin is a lot of fun to talk to – insightful, educated and definitely marching to the beat of his own drummer, which is, ostensibly, himself. Having only really been around for the better part of this year, the age of Felipendejo is just beginning!

Felipendejo!

Sorry for the delay in podcast again this week, folks. I’m just not as good at this as Kim is. As your Reverend, I am a slacker. iBut, it’s been for a good cause – I’ve recently started a new job as the booking agent for Headquarters Bar in downtown Reno. We are booking any and all acts, so hit up Rory Dowd at booking@headquartersreno.com if you want to get in on our fancy fancy (and really awesome sounding) stage.

Here’s your weekend Roundup:

Friday

Summer Daze presents : This Great State w/ Josiah Knight

-Solo Project Showcase: T-Heavy, Jen Scaffidi, Bad Haircuts, QB

Last Day Of Summer Fest at HQ

Saturday

-Reno Pyrate Punx benefit for Walkabout Youth Xpeditions

Hey gang! Long time no hear! It’s been a crazy month with cancellations and surgeries and travelling and a whole bunch of other unexpected things, but we are finally back! Most of us anyway.

Nick, Rick and Kim welcome the Infecto Skeletons back to the studio. Mike and Andrew stop in to talk about stuff. Now, this is Rory doing the post and guess what – I haven’t listened to the episode yet (shocker, I know), but I do know one thing that they are talking about on the show: the new album. That’s right! The long awaited second release from Reno’s favorite scuzz-punks will hit the internet this weekend, and for a limited time, you’ll be able to download “Get Your Shit Together”, absolutely free!

group picture of the band, with all the guys reaching forward with curled hands and grimaces on their faces.

Infecto Skeletons

After this though, it might be a while before you can catch them: in September, they are headed out for the Lost Skeletons Tour – a wild West Coast tour with Lost Idea, so grab the album while you can, learn all the words and wait patiently to forget them all while you puke on Justin’s feet in front of the stage at their next show in Reno.

Welcome to the Sausage Party!!! We’re happy to have Wolfman, Lucas and Hurricane from Grimedog in the studio today. These three Reno punks croon their way into your ears with a blend of 50’s rock, modern punk and effed up stories. And then, there’s the music. All kidding aside, we never stop kidding on this show. We should have been recording 20 min before the start of the episode because of all the funny shit we were saying. Unfortunately, you just got what was leftover.

Wolfman Grimedog, playing guitar and singing

Wolfman Grimedog

Wolfman, Lucas and Hurricane are Grimedog and a family – Father, Son and Brother/Uncle…. in the normal way, like respectively, not anything weird…(god, you guys are gross). Their familiality and familiarity has not bred contempt, (at least not currently), but a tight trio of Reno garage punk. Musically and conversationally, they work together as a cohesive unit, covering and picking up for one another as needed. For all the bands who played on this show, they seemed least perturbed by not being able to see the drummer. Anyway… they are a lot of fun to riff with and have some great songs. They’re working on a full length at Dogwater, so look for it later this year. You can catch them next at Boshee Bash out at Pyramid next weekend.

This weekend, the big deal is Northern Nevada Pride 2018! Break out your rainbow formal clothes and glitter cause it’s time to be fabulous! Or not! #dependingonhoweveryouselfidentifyandexpressyourself !!!!! Reno Pride is something that has become very important to our communities; it wasn’t always here and this town has not always been as tolerant and accepting as it is… ironic as that might seem to some of us. It is awesome that it has survived and grown and become a linchpin of the local civic calendar and highlight of many people’s year. Please go out and support the festival on Saturday as well as the associated events all weekend long at all of your favorite LGBTQ venues and establishments, new and old.

S9 E22

Greetings and welcome back to the Worst Little Podcast! Your hosts Rick, Nick “I’m Too High for This” Ramirez, Chewbacca and Kadillac Kim are back after a little vacation to bring you an exciting show featuring the immensely talented singer-songwriter, Ryan James, and the partial cast/crew of Good Luck Macbeth’s The Play About a Dick. We’re talking about dicks this week so buckle up. This episode is definitely NSFG (Not Safe for Grandma). Press play!

Ryan James poses in front of a mural in Reno.

Ryan James

First up is our musical guest Ryan James, who is prepping for his first full length album release this Friday at West Street Market with the Grimtones and Jake Houston. Ryan has put together quite the Reno super group to back him. You’re in for a treat Friday night at this all ages show.

Ashley James from Good Luck Macbeth posing with herchin in her hand.

We were also joined by Ashley, Dave, and Amanda Alvey who is the director of the newest show at Good Luck Macbeth, The Play About a Dick. From the event page: Good Luck Macbeth is proud to produce the US premiere of Aaron Wilton’s hilarious and provocative work, “The Play About a Dick”. A middle-aged woman, Enid, meets a younger man online for sex. But what starts as a simple rendezvous becomes a darkly comedic exploration of vulnerability, intimacy and empathy. After an unpredictable reaction, things become chaotic for Enid as her life gradually spirals outward. The play about a dick. examines themes of communication, guilt, kindness, solitude, gender roles, human connection, post-truth reality and existential vacuity. Its also a play about a dick.

Back again for the first time…solo! We have the pleasure of getting to hang out with our good friend Scott Turek this week. Scott (formerly of Bazooka Zoo) comes to us this time around with a very special offering – sad, sad, sad songs on the acoustic guitar. Despite his playful and sunny exterior, inside this husk of a man is a brooding and tortured heart, bereft of hope. Just kidding…. there’s like ONE dance-y tune in here (but seriously, ladies and gents, someone hug this man!)

Scott Turek, winking and pointing a finger at the camera in a "cool guy" pose under a cartoon star and rainbow

Scott Turek

Scott does gift us with a great set of his own music, some planned for, some not, but all quite on point and mesmerizing. His voice oozes into your ears like smooth caramel, taking you along for the story, while his fingers dance on the strings, keeping the momentum going. This man is some serious songwriting and playing talent; enough that I question whether or not his soul has been left tied up at a crossroads somewhere. You’ll be able to catch him at the Midtown Art Walk stage at Statewide Lighting, on Virginia Street on June 28. You can also find him on his website.

Kim is still not with us this week, but I’ll do my best to keep up with the weekend roundup:

Tonight June 21 has two great shows lined up for you:

Saturday

Low La La at The Canvas Cafe

MJB @ The Saint w/Nothing Like a Dame

Sunday

Seasoned troubadour Cole Adams wandered on into the podcast this week to play some tunes for us. Cole is a singer/songwriter new to the 775; most recently he had been living and playing in LA, having moved there from St. Louis, MO. Lots of love for ‘The Lou’ this week and The Rev and Cole gush at each other a little bit. After many years of strong performances, Adams struck out west, landing in LA for a time. He had the opportunity to play and record with Generations, a San Diego area band. This is also where he met hew partner, Stevie Rose, at a coffee shop. Stevie Rose is a henna artist working in the Reno/Carson/Sparks and Stead area. (You can find her designs or contact her for services at Heart of Henna.) The couple recently moved to the Reno area for new opportunities.

Cole will be appearing all summer long at The Renaissance and you can find out more about that on Cole’s Facebook page. Cole will be appearing at Ceol in a few weeks and will be a featured performer at the July “Loud As Folk”. Cole also has a Youtube channel, Cole Adams Music, where he will be releasing new videos every week.

As you may have gathered, this is not Kadillac Kim writing this. Kim had a major surgery this week and will be out of commission for a few weeks. At the time of this writing, Kim is healing well and itching to get back home. We wish her well and are excited for her to be fully healed and able to live her life again. WE LOVE YOU KIM!!!!!

Welcome back to the Worst Little Podcast! This week’s show is a special one. It’s our 300th episode! The whole crew is here and joining us is excellent Grass Valley punk duo, Slutzville. This week’s episode will leave you saying things like “this makes me want to get out there and dance but I’d throw out my back!” and wondering “what’s an Alaskan pipeline?”, and also, “how did these beans get in my bed?” Before we get to the music, here’s a special message from Rory on behalf of all of us at the podcast:

Seven years and three months ago, we had no idea what we were doing. We really weren’t sure how to make a podcast; we weren’t sure how to build an audience, and we certainly had no idea of the great undertaking we had just begun. In the last 300 episodes, I have been lucky enough to witness firsthand the growth and development of hundreds of local musicians, my own friends and the local cultural evolution that we have been a part of for the past near-decade. I have been, and continually am, humbled by the response support and encouragement we have received from our listeners, the musicians, and bands on our show. We are still delighted and tickled that we can be a part of your life every week. Thank you for inviting us into your ears and your brain. You are in our hearts. I would also like to thank my fellow cohosts and creators Nick Ramirez, Rick Spagnola, Josh “Chewbacca” Martin, and Kadillac Kim. I would like to thank them for their continued hard work dedication and passion for this thing we’ve created together. I could not have done this alone and I can think of no better crew to get it done with. You guys are my family. And to all of our interns past present and future keep up the good work. Life is short; I love you. -Thee Reverend Rory Dowd

NOW let’s hear some music! Press play.

Slutzville playing their instruments at a show.

Slutzville is Jessi Permenter: Lead Vocals
Natalie Thompson: Drums/ Back up vocals

Slutzville describes themselves as two loud and vulgar adults always down to tear it up. This two-piece queer punk band from Grass Valley gets around – they’re regulars of the Reno punk scene. Their next show in Reno is July 31st with Naked Aggression / Opposition Rising/ Dissidence at Shea’s. Click the link for more info. Check out their Bandcamp for more! Thanks so much to Slutzville for being on the show. We had a great time and we can’t wait to hear more from you!
