Rick Spagnola
S15E31: Azma Hazard- Smoking Weed On the Top of a Mountain

Another week another new school band, and we are here for it! This week’s guests Azma Hazard are fresh and original, with Al on vocals and bass, Paul on electric guitar, and Trevor “Tree” on drums and occasional vocals. Elements of psychedelic rock, punk ethos, and doomy stoner rock vibes. Cool and eclectic for sure. Paul’s groove and textures, Al’s steady bass and Tree’s rocking variety on the beats make for a unique sound and super fun to watch performance with passion, humor and intellect.

They’re sharp and funny, with great musical influences and song topics.
We’re looking forward to more rad music from this young vibrant trio.
We talk extensively about pizza, Rick tells a harrowing story from his youth and of course with our first time visitors, we play the worst little quiz!
You can keep up with Azma Hazard on Instagram @azmahazard.

Life is short and we love you. Thanks for listening!
S15E30: The Velvet Pouch- Clove Cigarettes and Quaaludes for Breakfast

We had a blast this week with the moody alternative band The Velvet Pouch.
Maddi sings in the style of dreamy goth acts like Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance, Siouxie etc., with beats from drummer Alex, hypnotic bass by Ajax and guitarist Vance who adds texture and shred, with a bit of a Jesus and Mary Chain, smidge of Deftones, and a little 60’s psychedelic sound. They’re young and into goth, post punk and jazz just to name a few genres.

Their sound is ethereal and atmospheric with haunting overtones. Velvet Pouch is a really cool band, if you’re a certain age you might reminisce having a clove cigarette while dancing at the alternative music club in the 80’s. They have their own unique style, perhaps comparable to obscure ’90s Seattle band Sky Cries Mary, and they would fit in at the Cruel World festival really well.
They’re charming and funny and have totally original answers on many of the worst little quiz questions.
They have plans to all live together in a band house and already have a van to hit the road. This kind of commitment could keep them creative and intensely focused on progressing The Velvet Pouch to the next level.

We really really dig this band, especially Dogwater Dick who of course shares the same love for bands like Skinny Puppy and the Cure.
You can keep up with them on instagram @velvetpouch.
This Saturday evening they’re at the Holland Project, all ages. Also, this Saturday Nick and Reverend Rory’s band One Ton Dually headline Punk Rocktober Fest at a Shoe Tree Brewery in Carson City with a stacked lineup. From noon to 5pm! Just enough time to get back to Reno for the Velvet Pouch show!

Whatever you do this weekend, stay kind and rock on!

Life is short and we love you.
Thanks for listening.
S15E29 Hardcore Brunch- Champagne Pride and Joy

This week we have the brand new “fake” band Hardcore Brunch. They say that because they just joined forces and each take turns doing solo songs and have a few where they all play together. While they each shine individually, magic happens when they’re functioning as a band. Argyle plays the omnichord and sings. Sue plays guitar and sings. Haley also plays guitar, the cajon box drum and sings as well.

Their songs are uniquely thoughtful, sometimes deep and often hilarious. It’s official y’all, Hardcore Brunch has rehearsed, been documented on the Worst Little Podcast, and have been selected by thee Spike McGuire to play a festival, you are a real band.
Jamie from the Brewery Arts Center joins us to give us details on the aforementioned festival coming up this Saturday in Carson City.

Nevada Pride A Capital City Celebration is the continuation of the Sassabration fest started at Sassafras restaurant and now hosted at the Brewery Arts Center. With an huge outdoor stage and black box theater stage, vendors, community outreach and donkey rides?!? Holy shit!
Here’s a flyer with the stacked lineup and set times.

We have a full house of laughter, chaos and love in store for you folks.
All that and more right here, this week on the five time first place local podcast returning champs according to the Reno News and Reviews’ Best of Northern Nevada poll 2025, the Worst Little Podcast in the World!
Life is short and we love you!
Thanks for being you, and thanks for listening.
S15E28: Failed Fates – Humanity Gets An F

This week we rock out with Failed Fates a kickass band blending hardcore punk and doom metal. Madi plays rhythm guitar, Tom with guitar and screams, Eric on drums and newest member Michael on bass.

Reporting on the mucky muck of life. Reflections of a dark twisted society. Both punk and metal but not necessarily thrash. It’s unique and we really dig it here at the podcast.
We learn origins of Failed Fates and listen to several tracks from their self-titled debut album.

They are playing out a lot in the Reno metal and punk scene and are on all the platforms and streams services. We discuss local events like the recent concert at UNR for Hot August Nights, ballon races and their landing in Dick’s front yard, and that thing in the desert getting rained out.

Join us for some hard and heavy music from authentic funny dudes. Another great episode.
Life is short and we love you.
Thanks for listening.

S15E27- Spencer Kilpatrick and the Sand Gators: Tunes from the Dunes

We’re back everyone! We have a real treat for you this week. Guitar shredder, singer songwriter and WLP’s first intern Spencer Kilpatrick and the Sand Gators are live in the Dogwater studios. With his gal pal Dani on second guitar and backing vocals, Ivan on bass, Alex on keyboard, Zack on drums, and Rachel on saxophone, backing vocals and a very well taken care of tambourine, the Sand Gators are a team of talented musicians.

Their music is rocking in a funky sonic soul revival kinda way that makes you shake your ass and lose yourself in the sound.
Wonderful soulful garage rock that would kill at rock clubs but also a band that swims in the sound with dreamy interludes akin to Pink Floyd and Morphine that could appeal to jam band fans. Hell, even bluegrass and country music listeners would dig the power of Spencer’s vocals and the groove and precision of all the players. They’re definitely a group with broad appeal.

We had a blast hanging with old friends and a couple new ones! Yes WLP virgins were here so we ripped through a hilarious edition of the worst little quiz.
They are on all the social media platforms and will be in Reno for the Off Beat Music Festival!

Nick plugs his upcoming back-to-back shows and an upcoming punk fest in Carson.

Thanks for the rad hang, Sand Gators!
Thanks for the tunes, Spencer, so great to catch up with your talented ass!

Life is short and we love you. Thanks for listening.
S15E26- NOSEBONE: No Shame in Their Game

OMG you guys. Holy guacamole batman… it’s the return of the band formerly known as The Shames!! That’s right folks Scaught (also bass player for Elephant Rifle) on drums, Penny on guitar and vocals and Mikie on bass and vocals live at the Dogwater studios! With their new music and new band NOSEBONE !

We hear several brand spanking new songs and one blast from the past.
The band gives us the skinny on what lead to the new direction and the podcasts history with the ladies from The Shames a beloved Reno punk band.
It was great to catch up with a full house of hosts (including Thee Reverend Rory Dowd!) and guests. Ricks sister Gina is a big WLP fan and was with us live in studio to experience an episode being created. She picked a great week to do so. The Shames were the first music played on the podcast way back on episode two, so this our 603rd really felt full circle.

We skip the quiz in favor of music and get some upcoming shows in Reno and where you can catch NOSEBONE playing their first show in October. They are newly on Instagram @nosebonereno .

We had a blast and are completely stoked for this power trio of rockers and the future of the mighty NOSEBONE.
Life is short and we love you.
Thanks for listening.
S15E25- The DEEPNESS: From Reno With Love

We are back with another sweet episode of WLP.
Paige Sargent is the DEEPNESS, sometimes with her guitar or maybe a cappella or with a full band, however presented she delivers the beauty, the love and the deepness of it all.

Nick met and invited her to the podcast when Breck Lee Durham hosted a tribute to John Prine. one listen and he knew we had to get her on the show.
Beautiful, gentle healing vibes with amazing harmonies, at times an ethereal vibe, and dreamy.
We discuss Paige’s life and recent trip to Nashville where she intends on moving in the near future.
In the meantime she is keeping a full schedule of shows.

We get to know her a little deeper with the worst little quiz and Nick highlights some upcoming shows.

So sit back relax and enjoy the beautiful sounds of the DEEPNESS. We did.
Life is short and we love you. Thanks for listening.

#599 S15E22- Luke Knudsen: Meta For the Metaphor

Folky ska loving singer songwriter Luke Knudsen closes out our 500’s with an intimate live acoustic performance of songs from 7 years of recording with Dogwater Dick. Yet to play out, save a few open mic performances, Meta For The Metaphor is sharp funny sometimes complex with clever word play and playful tunes that truly entertain.

We enjoy Meta’s journey from childhood to finally making it to our podcast at Ricks urging.
Luke is intelligent and funny, so of course the worst little quiz was a hoot.
So join Nick, Rick, Chewie and patch certified new cohost Patrick as we get to know Meta For The Metaphor aka Luke Knudsen. Great hang.

S15E21 ViceGrip: Coming Down the Mountain

Right before heading to the Dogwater studios for the recording of this week’s episode my wife asks me “who is on tonight?”. I say ViceGrip. She replies,”they sound tight.” She’s the funniest person I know. Love you baby. When I came home I was pleased to tell her they were indeed tight. With Matt on bass, Jonny on guitar and lead vocals, Ryan on guitar and Craig on drums, ViceGrip rip.

They seem to combine funky jams and outlaw rock with funny story songs with late seventies vibes a dual lead guitar sound that is jam-tastic. This particular iteration of players began five years ago North shore Lake Tahoe/Truckee area and recently hitting the Reno scene .
Ryan and Matt are brothers and have been friends with Craig and Jonny for years. They definitely have that kind of brotherly chemistry and are a hoot to hang out with. We had a great time listening to the jams live and getting to know them via the worst little quiz. A great one for sure. The middle school question was hit out of the park so to speak. Rad hang dudes. Maybe from Tahoe but Reno af and hella tight!

You can catch up with ViceGrip at wearevicegrip.com as well as Facebook and @wearevicegrip on Instagram. They released 3 new tunes on the fourth of July so hit all the platforms for that.

We too are on Facebook and Instagram. Please if you haven’t yet give us a follow. @worstlittlepodcast
