But it’s true! Carson City’s own dynamic musical duo, Raksha Paksha, took time out of their busy, busy social calendars to make time for little ol’ us. Raksha Paksha is a piano/drum combo comprised of Shaolin (vox/keys) and Carolyn (vox/drums) Gates. Carolyn, you may remember from Blunderbusst and Betty Rocker, is a powerhouse of a musician herself – so powerful that all of her children are extremely talented musicians in their own right. So, lets double down on some Gates-ness greatness.

On this weeks episode of Little House on the Prairie Worst Little Podcast we learn about the birds and the bees punk rock! It’s as simple as one-two-three-four! Helping us learn about punk rock (can you say ‘punk rock?’ I knew you could), is Reno’s very own Evil Ash! Evil Ash has been mixing it up at low-brow venues across our fair city for the last couple of years. It was high time they stopped by Dogwater for a session.

We had a lot of fun talking to them – lots of short fast songs too! But unfortunately, Evil Ash don’t have anything lined up firmly yet (Rick made sure no one was firm at the end of the show). Josiah Knight, a folk/Americana singer/songwriter from Reno, NV, stops by the studio again at the top of Season 7. Longtime supporter of the show (check out his episode from Season 3), Josiah remains quite active in the Reno music scene, becoming a staple performer at many an acoustic or folk showcase, like Reno’s own Loud As Folk. Friend of the show, Brian Jackson tells us that we should be looking out for Brother Paul , a blues musician from the Stockton area who has recently released his album “Cadillac Pickup Truck”, a retrospective of his last 10 years of writing and playing blues and rock.

I’d call them all young dudes, but they’re regular adults with jobs and wives and shit and that would just belie my own advancing years. So – these Reno kids, you see (cause we’re all kids in Reno) play some pretty spiffy music. If you’ve ever passed out at an all-ages house party in Reno in the last 25 years, you might recognize some of what they are doing. Not that you necessarily have seen them , but they are “Reno as fuck”.

Can you believe that? No one has made us stop bringing you awesome Reno music every week! (No one pays us for it either, but that’s another story.) From Nick, Rick, Chewie, Mr. Baker, the intern gang, and myself, we truly thank you for lending us your ears every week. It’s been a lot of fun and we hope to keep on doing it long past it’s relevancy. But today! Today we ARE relevant!

The young men Common Mishap are our first guests of this new season. Common Mishap, a Reno indie rock band, is Callum Burgener (git/vox), Mike Leland (bass), Colin Willis(git) and Garrett (drum). All battle born and Reno-bred, Common Mishap is a throwback to the basement shows of yesteryear (the 90’s…. or last year if you live in Reno) with complicated melodies and screaming angst and titles that have nothing to do with the pretty musics. (Really good stuff, actually)
They were actually a Dogwater Dick find. He went out of his way to connect Callum with the Rev, which is saying something. So we weren’t sure if they were hot, dumb punk rockers or what. We were pleasantly surprised when they turned out to be a bunch of perverted heathens with good music.

With the technical proficiency and musical knowledge of al the members, they can help but be stinkin’ good. Pink Awful is: Ashley Costelloe, Vocals; Mike Miller, Guitar/Vox; Bernie Paterson, Guitar/Vox; Emily Dunster, Bass; Brendan Dalton, Drums. And when I say they are “stinkin’ good”, I mean they are really effing talented with on-point musical proclivities.

Starting things off with a bang is Silver, self-described as “American Roots Music” and featuring the musical stylings of Adam Landis, Brendon Lund, Jeff Knight, Josh Kisor and Greg Gilmore. Unfortunately, Mr. Landis was not able to attend this evening’s recording as he was indisposed. “Indisposed, HOW?” you say? Well, according to all best information he “split his face open on NYE”. Not the Landis moneymaker, no!!!!! However, the band was still able to pull of a couple songs without his talents. (We wish him a speedy recovery)

In addition to some canned music with Landis on it, we got the rest of they guys in Silver to play us a couple songs live! It’s really some good stuff with strong music. This is high energy, high talent, Reno supergroup material; they’ll will make you wanna dance, drink or argue – and possibly all three. With a number of high-profile shows under their belt, they are looking forward to playing with Failure Machine and Joan and the Rivers at The Loving Cup on Feb 17. You can also catch Greg Gilmore at The Jungle on Jan 27 and in a short set this Friday at Foxy First Friday at the Foxy Olive ! The man gets around.
