Hey Kids – how about a spooky podcast? Well, tough shit. Halloween is now over – it’s November and we all know that means it’s just 50-some odd shopping days until the burning death and destruction predicted in the Mayan calendar! In Studio this week, we have Eric Foreman, Daisy Foreman (no relation), and Rhiannon Box of Stabby Unicorn. If you want to know what they soud like, I’d hazard that it’s 80s goth/dance music with the sensibilities of 90s shoe-gazer rock… or something like that.
Sorry it’s late again this week, but it’s a busy freaking season right now!!! No disrespect to The Big Bad, but between a computer meltdown, the (Un)Discovered comp Release on Tuesday at the Dogwater Punkin’ Carving Party, The Nowhere Nevada Carnival at Jub Jubs on Saturday, and the Rocky Horror Halloween Bash with Pinky Polanski at Cargo tonight at 8p and 12m, I’ve been slammed for time! And Not going to be my most thoughtful post yet.

I didn’t even actually make it to the show this past Monday because of a tech rehearsal for RHPS. Nick manned the ship this week.When I saw him later at the Blazing Mics open mic at Jub Jub’s he just told me, “Those guys are amazing.” I for one will just say, I really really like The Big Bad. Every time I have gotten to see them, they have killed it. New frontman Tree Woods is an old friend of mine and what he ads to the stew is like putting ghost chile’s on top of a roasted habanero curry powder! These guys are HOTT!

Hey, friends! It’s good to see you again! Whether you are at work, at home, Portland or Zanzibar, I hope you’re ready for some face-melting fabulousness. DJ Heidilicious came by to stomp on the studio this week and knows how to party, bringing her signature box o’ Franzia with her and getting us a little wine buzzy. She’s been really active in the Reno EDM scene this last year, playing clubs, promoting friends and organizing shows. Heidilicious is down for the scene and thinks it’s time for the scene to get down. We’ve never had a DJ like her on before and it was fun to watch her work.

DJ Heidilicious is also a part of the Reno Sound Collective, a group of local DJs that are putting on shows together sometimes at your club or other times at the house down the street. I personally really enjoyed watching them on Ustream a few weeks ago when I was at home doing laundry and housecleaning. To borrow a phrase from the 80s and 90s, it was some dope-ass shit. Heidilicious gives us a few tastes of the sonic goodness – a teaser, if you will. Her beets will trickle right down to your feets, shakin’ those hips on the way down.

This week gets a little crazy. Rory forgot his phone, Nick left early and things get extra NSFW. But of course they do: Kevin Dunn stopped by. One of the foulest songwriters in town Kevin has verbally vomited for tons of Reno bands including Dump Your Boyfriends, Courtesy Stitch, STM and a brief but exciting career as a rapper. We’ve got his ‘version’ of The Rainbow Connection with MC P-Hole on the episode and let me tell you – I don’t remember Kermit saying a damn one of those lyrics! Childhood memories ruined….

Also in the studio is Dan Steinmetz, a long-time drummer on the Reno scene who is currently herding Kevin drumming for STM. He brings the rock and the solid. We unfortunately didn’t get to talk to Dan as much as we wanted – Kevin had a lot to say. There may have been some shit talking going on… Especially after the bottle of citrus vodka he cradled like a baby.
We did miss an opportunity to talk to a mover and shaker though – there was supposed to be a phoner with DJ Heidilicious, but someone forgot his phone. We’ll have Heidi on in about a month, but until then, here’s a ‘short list of her upcoming shows:

Oh – and we didn’t talk about it on the show, but right before, during the ‘preshow’, we found a dead mouse in the backyard. Rory sat down near it and must have bumped it because when we looked it was moving a lot and then about 15 maggots came swarming out. There are only 3 in the picture, but there were lots more that ran. SOOOOO fucking creepy!

First, I’m on the defensive. I want to clear something up – I did not call in well! Rick was trying to call in sick and we had a last-minute cancellation, so I rearranged my life. Then Nick calls and says we’re still doing the show. Bitches be trippin! I was fully prepared to do the show this week, SERIOUSLY! Then life happened… and I hung out with my kid and learned a song on the GEEtar – sue me. OK, enough rationalization and onto the show.
Felix says: “Arrrr… You’re number one!”
In addition to the regular weekend recap, we find out that Chewie has a stalker in his neighborhood, cabs will not stop to pick up Felix, Nick is temporarily hooked on Vicodin and Rick sat around the house and polished his… microphone, all alone. Fun and exciting! Shocker alert – Felix got really drunk and blacked out last weekend after a show!! Wow! It’s a fun show, despite being sans Reverend. Chewie busts out some old tracks from the Vault and we get to hear a little music from Reno greats Cranium, M.C. Gob, The Line, and War Maggots.

Lots of great stuff happening around town this week. Thursday night, Melvin Makes Machineguns are headlining the Summer Music Series at the Alley. Friday night we’ve got Boot to the Kool , Merkin, The Kanes, Miracle Drugs, and The Firebombing at The Knit; Antique Scream, The Shames, and Walk of Shame at Lincoln Lounge; and Black Sheep of Kali, Glacier and The Harvest and The Hunt at Shea’s. Saturday you can find CRUSH and Smiley Mikey at Sidelines; and the Blitzkreig Pop dance party with DJ Endif and Hyperkarma at The Biggest Little City Club.

Wasn’t sure what to expect when I booked Paul Allen on the show this week. I mean, I knew he was a good musician and quirky lyricist – I liked that about him – but, the dude, like, only ever plays in living rooms and porches, right?!?! I wasn’t sure if Paulie was up to it, frankly. He might have frozen up or even peed a little in the studio. Then Rick would have had to rub his nose in it, whilst bellowing, “NOOO!!!!” (Yeah, I just said “whilst”. Is there a problem? (Other than my blatant aggression and latent personality split?)) I am happy to say though, Paul came through and really knocked our socks off. He only froze up during the Worst Little Quiz, but still got a respectable score and beat himself silly.
Lots of great stuff happened in Reno, lots of great stuff coming up – I think we talked about a lot of it during the show. I’m pretty sure we did, but it’s kind of a blur – and I was sober this week! The Notorious R.A.D. is back in Reno and will be cutting up some new drops in the studio soon (that means to record funny things, it is NOT a euphemism for drug use – what do you think we are, Californians?). We had a lot of fun on this episode, and only got a little bit gross. That happens in our new segment – Dogwater Dick’s Disgisting Definitions. It’s really, well, not good, but funny as hell.

Anyway, I would like to proudly announce that in this episode we actually offend Jeff Done. Listen for it! He even says so. We take a little journey back through his musical career, From ‘Pennies’ to ‘Tiny Private Dancer’, which is featured in the upcoming Reno movie, Nowhere Nevada. Jeff might come off like a slobbering bulldog, but he is a pretty damn good songwriter, singer and lyricist. Who’da thunk that this punk Reno thug would keep being this talented!?! During the podcast we talk a bunch about Ty Fritzsching, former lead guitar for Stevedave; the Stevedave, Dump Your Boyfriends and Dale Kellams show over the weekend; and a whole lot of other mildly offensive things. We learn a lot of revealing things about Jeff an Lydia during the Worst Little Quiz when the gloves come off!

Finally, finally, finally! We got The Kanes in the studio!! Well, 2/3 of them anyway – Mick was just too cool for school and couldn’t make it, but Adam Springob and Greg Gilmore came in with their guitars and laid down some sweet sweet honey for your ears – including *ahem* another worldwide exclusve first-listen here on the Worst Little Podcast. Yeah. We kewl like dat. These guys are one of the most exciting bands in town, hands down. I love watching them play. This acoustic set they play for us, while a little more laid back, is still pretty powerful and pretty pretty pretty. We talk about their potential shows in the future and some of the shows they’ve played htis summer – and then the quiz. The Quiz! We have our first ever DISQUALIFICATION! I also want to take a moment out to mention Kelly ‘Stitch’ Proud, a local performer and friend of the show. Last week, Kelly was hospitalized for an unknown ailment and is currently on a vantilator to breathe for her and a paralytic drip. She is literally fighting for her life right now and not out of the woods yet. Since she is a performer and member of the service industry, she doesn’t have health insurance or much to fall back on when she doesn’t work. Due to a communication crisis, or guests were not able to make it to the studio this week. Not sure if they even knew to be here. If you’re a regular show go-er in Reno, listen close and see if you can pick up what we’re puttin’ down. It’s REALLY subtle.
Fortunately, though, it gave us the opportunity to just talk and talk and talk about the (Un)Discovered 2012 show last weekend. It was a blast and that’s about all I’ll say here – we talk way too much about it during the episode. It also gave Chewie the opportunity to come through like he always does with some archival recordings of some questionable great Reno bands from yesteryear. We have recordings of The Princes of Pork; Dirty Steve; Mike, Tyson and Tommy; and the big bad Brian Knopf! They’ll all kick you in the teeth and send you running home to your bronies.
Felix lost an earring during the love fest.
Also, Justan Hoover joins us in studio to not really talk much at all. He was kind of an actually boring guest… until we got to the quiz. Justan really brought it when it came to a couple of the quiz questions, beating off out Chewie by a slim margin. We also got our occasional weekly update from The Vampirates who are on their whirlwind U.S. tour. They played at a place called the Murder Basement. It’s not a club. It’s really some punk basement. With a name. About murder. I wish I was as cool as Dave Masud.
The smiles are of ridicule, not entertainment. But I thank them anyway.
We had a lot of fun. Even if it was just rehashing things we did 48 hours earlier and listening to the music of the 90s. Not sure if you will (yes I am… pshhhht… this show is always awesome!), but there are a lot of stories from the weekend that are pretty fucked up at the least. Love ya, Felix! Love ya, DaKodiak!
