They do it down and dirty. Who? The Kanes, that’s who! On this week’s episode, Greg Gilmore and Adam Springob of The Kanes come in and play us a few songs off of their upcoming album, “Black Magic”. Drummer Mike Orris had better things to do, so we got to hear Greg and Adam duel with guitars. These guys are always fun – if you can decipher what we’re saying when we’re all talking over each other.

I’m a little short on time myself, so I’m gonna give it to you down and dirty as well. The conversations get weird; Greg and Adam really blow it on the quiz; Nick steps up to the plate; Chewie’s still out; Rick and Rory are golden, as always. No-call, no-show on the part of both the Vampirates and The Shames. But at least the shames had a good excuse – they were somewhere near the border south of Phoenix and a lot of police/emergency band radio was making their cell phone reception spotty. We look forward to hearing from them next week? If nothing else, we’ll get a tour recap when they’re on the show in June (yes, really, this time).

Hello all you fine people out there in internet land! Since nothing goes off without a hitch around here, we had some scheduling problems because Reverend Rory is an asshole. But our good friend Jarrod Evans, bassist from Slut Fungus, was able to come in and throw down some acoustic tracks with us. Thanks for coming through, mang!

Also in the studio is Reno artist Kelly Ogilvie. She has a show that will be closing at Reno Art Works on April 25. Her show, Well Red, will be on display until then. Ogilvie is a painter and fiber artist, meaning she makes art from fibers and materials. I’ve also seen her do a little spot welding here and there – follow the hyperlink on her name to find her FB page and check out some of her art there. As talented as she is adorable, Kelly kinda keeps quiet until the quiz. THEN the gloves really come off and we all fall in love with her.
How can you not trust a face like this?
Also want to mention that there is a great show this weekend at the Reno Tahoe Comedy Club in the Pioneer Underground with Frankie Quinones. Would have had a phoner, but for the aforementioned scheduling issues, it didn’t happen. However, personally, Frankie seems like a pretty cool guy, so you should go support him and Reno Comedy at the club this Friday or Saturday night!
And if you’re looking for something do do, don’t forget about Stregapalooza this Friday night, hosted by Reverend Rory (who will play a set as well) and featuring THREE of Nick’s bands. Saturday, Rev. Rory will also be at A Salon 7 for their 9th annual White Party Fundraiser. All obvious jokes aside (like the ones we make on the episode), this is another really great benefit – this year it will be going to FOUR separate charities. Pretty killer.

This past Sunday morning, we lost an important part of the Reno scene – guitarist, songwriter and frontman Dale Kellams gave up the ghost in his fight with cancer. It fuckin’ sucks. Dale was a good friend to many people and a seminal influence on the music of Reno since the ’90s. We pay tribute to Dale this episode by playing a bunch of SPROUT songs and talking about his goofy ass.

We also have in the studio, the ever filthy and inappropriate, Jenny PezDespencer. Not only was she a very close friend to Dale, but she was also originally booked to come on and promote A Salon 7’s 9th Annual White Party Fundraiser. With her is our new friend Phillip Brown. The two of them are dirty, dirty birds and should be spanked. Repeatedly. Slowly. 😉

Drummers? They Don’t need no stinking drummer – they’s the Six Mile Station and they’ve got a ton of strings! Six Mile Station is prety killer. Spike McGuire on guitar and vocals, Tyson Schroeder on the stand up bass and backing vocals, Alán Burtón on mandolin and vocals, and Nathan Carter on the fiddle, all to kick your ASS with folk music. When it comes to catchy and harmony, they don’t fuck around. They play three songs for us and sneak a peek at a track from their new album.

We had them on with a CD before, but this time we got them live – The Vampirates!!! Dave, Chris, Chris and Pat set up in the studio and blasted us with 10 or 12 songs in our 90 minutes together. They are leaving on their ten year anniversary tour this week and – you can’t even tell how excited they are. I mean, The Vampirates are easily the most laid back band we have ever had in the studio – nothing phases them! Then they kick you in the face with killer, homegrown Reno punk rock.

We also want to send our personal condolences to our friend, Cam Hog, and her family after the tragic loss of her brother, Ashton Pike, in a motorcycle accident last week. If you haven’t been following the story, Pike was a local bartender and single father of a 2-year old daughter. His death was obviously sudden and is leaving a large hole in their lives, especially his daughter. This Friday night, 3/1/2012, Rise Nightclub will be raising money from their cover charge and accepting donations for him and his family. All proceeds of the show (and last weekend’s benefit at 40 Mile Saloon) will go to pay for memorial costs; any remaining funds will go to a trust fund support his young daughter. Please get out and show some Reno love and help take care of our own!

Happy Valentines Day!!! Hope everybody gets some!!!!
We had a fun, if at times, awkward show this week. Hope you love the phone calls. In studio we have Reno musician Larry Cooper and Reno Comedian Pat Shillito. They came to play and we had a lot of fun despite all the distractions… No! really! I’m still scratching my head about a lot of what happened on the show this week. If this sounds confusing – good! Listen to the episode and see if you can decipher the mystery.
I don’t want to say Larry does drugs or anything, but he looks like he’s been haning out with Nick too much.
So, yeah, I’m stuck on this whole Valentine’s Day thing. It’s the first one I’ve been single for in almost a decade. Should I write the girly a poem? How do I come off as not creeperish? Do I ignore the holiday entirely? How does one approach a booty call on Valentine’s Day? So many questions, so many embarassing outcomes. $5 says I chicken out on my plans.

Well, talking to Bobby Slayton might be an exaggeration – listening to him bust Rev. Rory’s chops and lie talk about how much he likes Reno is more like it. He’s a pro and really came to play. We’re wrapping things up with some great momentum this year. It took me all year to remember to book the young men of CRUSH on the podcast. Daniel, Jimmy and Aaron stopped by to grace us with an acoustic set of their techno-rock-dubstep-pop. Not only did they and their awesome three-part harmonies kill it, but they came to have fun. We really didn’t have to ask many questions; the boys took the conversation wherever they wanted it. And that was mostly talking about pot. Pot and not getting laid.

From Walden’s to the Knitting Factory to the Alley, CRUSH can pack the house with more teenagers than any other party band in town. Mostly because they themselves are fresh out of HS, and diligently applying themselves to the College of Rock and Roll! All joking aside, with two full-length CDs under their belt, they are serious about being working musicians and have the chops to prove it. Even in an acoustic set, their tight songwriting and performance skills shine through. PLUS they are the favorite local band of Rikku, who recorded them a special message-song that we play at the top of the show.

Jenny is working hard at hardly working. She has a slew of shows this very weekend. Friday night she is opening up for national comedian Ramsey Moore at The Knitting Factory. Saturday, you can catch her at the Reno Tahoe Comedy Club at Pioneer Underground with Thai Rivera who you can catch on Comedy Central specials. Sunday, she’ll probably be hungover or at Red Rock comedy night. Or both. Probably both.

Lots of laughs, little drinking and a brand new theme song this episode! Our second season might be winding down, but we’re still coming at you full force! This week we have musical powerhouse, John Frederick, and photographer/model, Elsie Marie, in studio with us. We forgot to take pictures this week so you’ll have to make do with acual nice photos of our guests from their respective FB pages. Elsie was a guest on our show last year and has had a crazy year of becoming a spokesmodel and Reno Tahoe Tonight contributor, being super involved with photography and the Reno culture, AND undergoing a series of surgeries! That’s right – surgeries, as in plural. Listen to the mid segment of the show to find out more about her trials and tribulations. There is a benefit for her that you MAY have heard about – Elsie After All – that will be this Saturday Jan 19 at Swill Coffee and Wine (6pm-9pm) and Chapel Tavern (10pm-2am).
John Frederick is one of the featured performers of the event at Swill, AND a super new friend. This guy is amazing and fun and talented. He’s got his fingers in theater, and music, and organizing, and …other stuff! Really, even fighting off a creepin’ crud, Frederick has a killer full sound in his singing voice. He played a bunch of originals, including – that’s right – a WLP EXCLUSIVE listen to a brand new song that had no name, but now it does (because we just give and give ande give here on the podcast).
We also MISS a phone call from BJ Johnson, Washington-based comedian that will be appearing at the Reno Tahoe Comedy Club this Friday and Saturday night. Once we get this phone thing worked out, we promise the phone interviews will be better! We also have an Open Mic roll call that is completely confusing – see if you can keep up, there will be a quiz next week.
