The Worst Little Podcast – 2015 03 02

I am so conflicted about this episode!!!! First, we have the cast from “Tooth of Crime” on, which is so awesome; second, Jamie hosted the show in its entirety, which is good and bad (good that she can handle it, bat that my job is at stake now); and finally – it’s the last episode ever from beautiful suburban Sparks! What is this world coming to?!?!

Dave Richards

Dave has found something!

Lew Zaumeyer

Lew/Hoss

“Tooth of Crime” is a play written, and then later re-written, by Sam Sheppard. It involves live music, cars and fire. It is dangerous theater. It is a play that has not always been well received. It is a play that may have never been done correctly, even when directed by the author. A small group of actors from Reno believe that they can pull it off like no one has.

Scott Dundas and Jill Marlene

Scott/Chaser and Jill/Becky Lou

Nick Ramirez

Nick/Meera

Director Dave Richards brings most of his cast and the band to the studio with him to talk about the upcoming performances. He is joined by Lew Zaumeyer (Hoss), Jill Marlene (Becky Lou), Scott Dundas (Chaser), Andy Luna (Crow), Nick Ramirez (Meera), Rory Dowd (Rudio Ran) from the cast and also Jeff Done, Pat Mayfield, Dave Masud and Chris Fox from the Reno “Tooth of Crime” band. For a last session, we crammed so many people in that the whole band AND Reverend Rory had to sit in the living room! That’s why Jamie got to host the show! (I knew you were wondering)

Rory Dowd

Rory/Rudio Ran

Jeff Done on bass

Jesus watches over Jeff

If you’re interested in seeing the show, Tickets are for sale at Jub Jub’s, The Melting Pot and online.

Dave Masud behind the drums

Dave’s ready to rock

Pat Mayfield on the keys

Pat’s happy to be here

Chris Fox

Chris didn’t get up all night.

For a final episode at the old house, we couldn’t have asked for a better set of guests – some old friends, some brand new to the show. ANd we had fun. We will be taking a one week hiatus so Dogwater Dick can move ye olde studios into Reno! Crazy things are afoot in the neighborhood. Chekkit what’s been happening down the block:

Johnny Rolling - Love Like Wes

Johnny Rolling

Greetings, fellow travelers!! I hope your seat belts are on, because we’re going on a field trip! Johnny Rolling, Erik Grubbs, Kieran Clark and  Henry Lindsay from Love Like Wes put in some time during this last summer of Dogwater. All Battle-Born and Reno raised, they come in with their unique charm and songs about girls and make Reverend Rory feel old as dirt bring us up to speed on themselves. First of all, none of the members of Love Like Wes are actually named Wes, although he is a real person. While we typically avoid such trite questions, this one was begging to be asked. Find out the store during the second segment. Or is it the third?

Erik Grubbs - Love Like Wes

Erik Grubbs

Love Like Wes is fun, pop rock from Reno Nevada. They’ve been playing around for a few years now and are building a steadily growing following, especially know that they have ‘hair down there’ and can get into bars. All kidding aside, they are fantastic musicians and came to play on the show. And they help us bring to you another WLP exclusive! Starring inour first ever Father/Son connection, bass player Henry Lindsey is the son of none other than Bruce “The Bruce” Lindsey, friend and former gust of the show.

Henry Lindsey - Love Like Wes

We would also like to take a second to congratulate the cast and crew of Nowhere Nevada for being awarded the title of “Best Feature” at the SF Global Film Festival in San Jose last weekend. That’s right, they got the ‘Best in Show’ award at the event they’ve been working so hard for!! We’ve been supporting them and invested in the project for about two years now, so it’s fantastic for Nick Ramirez, Brian Sutherland, Juli Green, Dave Richards, Jef Derderian, Liz Cole, Felix Danger, Max Volume, Andy Luna, Cori Lynne, Tom Plunkett, Xtevion, Rick Spagnola, Tom Gordon and all the rest of the crew get their deserved accolades. Keep checking in because this is not over; the next step is distribution and we will ube sure to let you know when you can finally see this movie or get a copy of your very own. Check out the Nowhere Nevada IMDB page while you wait! Congrats again, everyone!

Kieran Clark - Love Like Wes

We also discuss the future fate of JB the Intern, who pulls his second no -call no-show in as many weeks. Boy is gonna pay.
Enjoy the end of summer!

The Worst Little Podcast – S4 E 26 – Download Link

OMG This was such an awesome show. Good good GOOD friends of the Show, Sit Kitty Sit, drove up to Reno from the Bay Area just to be on the podcast. Kat Downs Gaudette and Mike Thompson are a killer two-piece band that will blow your mind. They started playing shows up here in Reno about a year ago and fell in love with the audiences and venues of our fine city. You can’t keep them away now!

Kat Downs Gaudette

Kat is HUNGRY!

Sit Kitty Sit is keyboard, drums and phenomenal singing. A truly unique act they can and have played with everyone from solo guitarists to full on metal hardcore bands. They first played up here with Lucas Young, a previous guest on the show and great guy who just HAPPENED to also stop by the studio this week to say ‘Hi!’. Sit Kitty Sit ended up staying at Dogwater Studios that weekend and Rick and Kat and Mike all fell in musical love. Since then, they’ve remained in contact with us and played a few more shows in the Sierras. What you get today is just a little taste of their amazing live show. Super fun, witty and talented, you don’t want to miss the,

Mike THompson

So is Mike

Before I sign off, I just want to remind everyone of the big Nowhere Nevada show at Jub Jub’s this Friday, August 8. With 12 local bands featured in the movie, and film clips being shown all night long, this is something you don’t want to miss! It’s a fundraiser to help the cast and crew go to San Jose for the red carpet film fest that the movie has been selected to be in. Please come out to support Reno art and culture!

Reno Pride – you got some?

The Worst Little Podcast – S4 E25 – Download Link

Welcome once again! We’re happy to welcome back to the studio some of the team who worked on Reno’s own movie Nowhere Nevada. Executive Producer Brian Sutherland and the dandy tuna himself, actor Andy Luna (Overload) stop in to let us know the current status of our favorite movie! Nowhere Nevada has been doing well, already having taken a 2nd place prize for  Crime dramas in an Ohio film festival.

Andy Luna, who plays "Overload" in "Nowhere Nevada"

Overload / Andy Luna

We play a bunch of songs from the soundtrack and talk a lot of shit this week, with the conversation ranging about wherever our hearts and minds took us. The quiz with Andy Luna is particularly fun – he came to play and did well! I can’t even begin to tell you what we talked about, mainly because I forgot to take notes. We touched on a lot, but most importantly, the Nowhere Nevada fundraiser on 8/8 to help the production team get to the big film festival in SF later this month.

Brian Sutherland, Executive Producer of Nowhere Nevada

Executive Producer / Brian Sutherland

I don’t have much for you this week, except to thank Andy Luna and Brian Sutherland for stopping in, and to wish them, Nick and all the rest of the production team who is going down a lot of broken legs.

Dogwater Studios transforms into a house of rock and roll when these boys come around. Johnny Harpo, Wes Forster, Jesse Gaddis and Greg Grenade of The Defabulators invade with their blazing guitars and yowlin’ sound! There wasn’t a dry seat in the studio after their first song – mostly sweat, but I’m not picky.

Greg Grenade of The Defabulators

Greg Grenade

The Defabulators are back in action and ready to play and record a bunch of new tunes they play for us on the show today. Nothing is booked just yet, though and they don’t have a website or anything, because they’re old skool Reno rock and rolla’s like that. You’ll have to keep your ear to the ground to catch them.

The Worst Little Podcast – S4 E 23 – Download Link!

Holy crap, it’s hot as fuck in Reno, despite the fairly unprecedented 4 days of serious rain in a row. Hope you all are keepin’ cool and pulling a Saturday Night Fever! Whoo! In Studio this week, we have Bill McKean and Zeke Griffin from Strange on the Range, a Reno blues/Americana/Blurgrass BLUEgrass band. No. Hell with It – They are Blurgrass. Made that shit up just now I did. Bill plays guitar and Zeke plays Mandilins. Actually, he freaking makes the suckers. Custom and cool and – damn!

Bill McKean - Guitar for Strange on the Range

Bill McKean – Upright and confused

Strange on the Range is a featured act at The Morris Burner Hotel’s Reno Folk Festival, happening this weekend as a part of Artown. If you haven’t been to a show at the Morris yet, you are missing out on a whole lot of what’s happening in the Reno art and performance worlds. Three days of folk music, a trip backwards in time, covering current era, the 60s, and traditional roots of folk music, as a tribute to Pete Seeger, who died earlier this year.

Zeke Griffin - Mandolin for Strange on the Range

Zeke Griffin – MANdolin’

Jill Marlene, event organizer, also joins us partway through the episode and joins the guys on a couple songs. It’s , once again, a fun episode, but it got hot in the studio. It’s hot now. I’m done.

Thanks for listening.

The Worst Little Podcast – S4 E21

I’m WHOREible at this deadline thing! Sorry folks, Reverend Rory had a poetry reading a the Morris Burner Hotel’s monthly show, Burning Words, then went out to catch some comedy at Third Street Bar. Twas a lot of fun getting out during the midweek! I encourage you all to do it every now and then!

Up Is The Down Is The

On the show this week we have a lively time – a long recap of the past week for everyone and all the awesome events we went to and enjoyed. Joining us in the studio for the first time is Up Is The Down Is The, a solo music project from Reno NV. Andrew Martin is the man behind the music and is as impressive as he is charming! Dogwater Dick and Reverend Rory caught him after Sit Kitty Sit at Jub Jub’s a few weeks ago and booked him on the spot! With a guitar, drums, pickle barrel and a looper, he creates wonderful aural creations to delight your ears.

Andrew Martin leaning into the mic

Andrew Martin

Also along for the ride is the always fun and charming Samantha Gates. She just stopped by to chill out with her favorite podcasters and got to take the full Worst Little Quiz, with no pulled punches (since her mom wasn’t in the room this time). Samantha is currently working on some projects that are under wraps at the moment, but that we hope to be able to tell you more about in the future. (Rick didn’t take a picture of Samantha because he hates women is a fag was so busy setting up Up Is The Down Is The.

Nick Ramirez flipping off the camera while Andrew Martin smiles

How rude!

You can catch Up Is The Down Is The on July 2 at Holland Project with The Baddest Beams from Sacramento, CA! Please go check him out  – great music, great venue!! Hope you have a fun week – we’ll see you next week with some of the cast of the Tahoe Players’ productions of Sweeny Todd and Avenue Q.

Siddown and listen up!

The Worst Little Podcast – S4 E20 It’s another fine week in the Biggest Little and I hope you’re out enjoying the fantastic weather! This week we are very happy to welcome Chari Boom Brap into the studio. Chari is one of the movers and shakers in the Reno spoken word and hip hop circles. If you don’t already know her name, you should, because she makes it happen. Featured prominently as the front woman for Knowledge Lives Forever for the past few years, Chari brings tracks from her own new solo project, Download This, on the show with us. Her words run deep.

Chari Smith smiling for the camera

Ckari Smith, aka Knowledge

Chari Boom Brap is as nice as she is hardworking as she is deep thinking. Fortunately, all of her hard work has not gone unnoticed. Chari is happy to announce that this week she is the first rapper to ever be awarded an Artist’s Fellowship from the Nevada Arts Council. This is not small accomplishment and you know she faced some steep competition to be honored with this award. We’re happy to congratulate her on this and you should too.  Chari Boom Brap is a hot commodity and has a lot of Reno pride – hopefully some of us will get to ride her coattails one day.

Grant

The steely gaze of JB the Intern

We would also like to congratulate Nate the Intern. He has been promoted to Nathan the Production Assistant! Rick for one looks forward to his continuing work behind the scenes here at WLP. But what would our show be without an intern and whipping boy?? We bring you the next in a long line of losers, JB the Intern!!! JB had a rocky start, batting about .500 in task accomplishments. Listen in this week, because if all goes well, this will be the last time you hear his voice for a while.   Thanks for Listening!

Hey, kids! It’s a loud talky show from the beginning on, but TEMPO – Adam Springob, Glynn Osburn and Misha Bardashov – steps up to the challenge and delivers some really kick ass music. Despite their rookie status as a band, these seasoned and talented musicians put together a really polished sound.

Glynn Osburn - bass for TEMPO

Glynn Osburn

TEMPO has played a number of big shows and with a lot of local headliners in the past few months. They are looking forward to a hopefully busy season of show playing this summer after they finish recording their EP cassette tape. Oh, yeas.

Adam Springob - singer and guitar for TEMPO

Adam Springob

Lots of great stuff coming up in the next few weeks! Including Jenny Pez DeSpencer’s live comedy album recording and Monsters and Elves, hosted by Reverend Rory Dowd, both on Saturday May 31. Further out, Rev. Rory will be doing a one hour ‘variety show’ at the NNNLA’s Impact 2014 at Tronix on June 7 and hosting the Vaud Villan Freak Show, a fundraiser for Evil Dead The Musical The Reno Edition  at Jub Jub’s on June 14! Bands not from Reno???? *gasp*

The Worst Little Podcast – S4 E16

So, what do you do when some guys from out of town show up and want to play your show? Put them on a podcast! Enter Daniel G. Harmann and Kye Alfred Hillig. We had a bit of a time crunch this week, but you may remember that we talked to a couple guys on the phone last week. Well, this week, they came even closer and stopped at Dogwater Studios!

Dan Harmann - happy to be here!

Dan Harmann – happy to be here!

On tour for a whirlwind trip including Modesto, Boise and Reno, these two troubadours with a troubled past played a show at St. James Infirmary right after the podcast, like motherfucking rock stars. It’s really a shame that Kye Hillig and Dan Harmann don’t live closer, because we had a great time with them. I almost wish I could talk more shit (about Dan’s big head, or that Kye looks a little bit like Tootsie) but they were really cool guys! I’d love to pick their brain a little longer.

Kye Hillig smiling profusely

Kye Hillig – “Wouldn’t ‘cha like to be my neighbor?”

I would be remiss and usually am  if I didn’t mention the guy who out this all together. Brian Jackson, the man behind the camera, videos, media and booking, reached out to us out of the blue and made this happen. He wouldn’t stop messaging me, even when I tried really hard to ignore him. Thanks to him, I had a great show this week!

Brian Jackson - photographer and media manager from Washington State

Brian Jackson – also happy to be here!

Ok, I’m just making words up now. Time to end this. But one final thing I want to mention is “So Say we All”, a Dance Dance Technoqueer Revolution! This edgy event “aims to explore ideas of identity. Who are we? Where do we belong? Where is our place in the more-than-human community? One of the fundamental questions we ask repeatedly is, “Are you alive?” Using Battlestar Galactica, post-feminist theory, and cyborg analysis as a framework to examine ideas about sex and gender, “So Say We All”challenges us to reconcile with the ‘other’as we pursue our rightful place in the Universe.”

I’m intrigued. Organized by the Great Basin Movement Project and featuring DJ Heidilicious, “So Say We All”  will run this week, May 23-25, at Valley Arts. Check out the event page!

Oh, and Chewie’s back.

Thanks for Listening!
