It’s always nice to be pleasantly surprised by a band, especially one you’ve never seen or met before! Joseph Bonauro, Patrick Chapman and Kurt Gensheimer of Man Downstream decided to take the chance and come onto the show. They were recommended by loyal listener Jude Mayne. Turns out that Bonauro and Chapman have been in and around the Reno music scene for most of their lives – but didn’t know Jude. It’s Kurt, the newbie, that had the connection. Go figure!

That’s not the only way Man Downstream was surprising. They were all intelligent and talented and played some wicked songs. All of it was impressively put together, including their song ‘RNO’ – all about our favorite Little City! They have a fun sound, calling back to the funk rock fusion of the early 90s, but with a definite more ‘indie/garage’ edge to it all. They blew us all … away! They blew us all AWAY.

We love our non paying job so much. We get to hang out with cool musicians and listen to music every week. This week was no different as Baldo Bobadilla from Drinking With Clowns stops by the studio with some sneak peeks at their upcoming CD, El Vuelo. (featuring one SPENCER KILPATRICK (and you know where he got his start)). I could say Drinking With Clowns is a Reno Latin music band, but that’s selling them short – Drinking With Clowns is a Reno band that happens to play a lot of Latin influenced music. They’re playing out regionally and even internationally, at music festivals and charitable fundraisers, all the damns times, seducing women with their talent, intelligence and many other hidden assets.

Unfortunately, Baldo was the only one who could stop by this time, but we had our hands full with him. In one of the HIGHEST scoring quizzes ever, Baldo does not shy away from any questions and gives some really revealing answers. If you haven’t caught them before, Aversion Therapy is a punk rock/spoof rock band from Reno NV. They are friends of the show and early patrons of the Dogwater Studios! They leave a legacy of witty lyrics and socio-local commentary in their wake. THis week, they play a bunch of their new tracks from the album.

We bring you Hella Fitzgerald! Songbird Lily Baran and ivory tickler Tristan Selzler throw down a little session at the studio this week. Performing intermittently around town for the last few years, Hella Fitzgerald is a Reno jazz combo that coalesces out of strains of melodies in the air whenever they are needed.

These fine performers flip Dogwater Dick’s lid – you can nearly hear him peeing his pants after their first song. They throw down a selection of jazz standards and modern transpositions, a little change of pace for us. Once again -WLP bringing you exciting new content every week!
In addition to Hella Fitzgerald, Baran and Selzler are busy folk. Selzler sits in and regularly performs at clubs and bars around Reno with different jazz combos. Baran is a major part of the operations at Tahoe Players, a performing arts facility for young people in Incline Village that regularly entertains audiences around the Reno/Tahoe area.

We always strive to mix it up on the show, keep you on your toes. This week, we’ve got BLC Clothing in the studio! Shawn Harroun and Mike Weber are the brains and the brawn (not respectively) behind the Reno-based clothing line. In operation for just over a year, BLC clothing designs and sells lines of hoodies, men’s and women’s T-shirts, stickers and sexy, sexy underwear. Custom work is up their alley too.
Harroun and Weber also have their fingers in a bunch of pots, not just BLC Clothing. Weber is also a muckety-muck over at Weber Graphics, a family owned screen printing company in Reno/Sparks. Harroun, in addition to hawking T-shirts, slings drinks down at Third Street bar and has been known to spin a turntable or two. We have a lot of fun chatting with them around the table, and even have a spirited edition of The Worst Little Quiz.
Weber also plays in Death By Society, a Reno-based band. Unfortunately, his band mates could not make it. So it all came down to Harroun, who came through with some beats composed by friends of his. Oh, yeah – there’s the kicker: we got DJ music this week, for all the EDM fans in internetland. Check out the tasty treats from dBot, Miss Haynes and 6Blocc throughout the show.

A magical tale of innocence, love, villany, passion and betrayal with music and movements performed by a cast of Reno musicians, actors, singers and dancers, this show has a very short run of only four performances. A live staging of the Decemberists’ album, the Tribute to “The Hazards of Love” is a one-of-a-kind performance and a credit to Reno theater. You don’t want to miss it! The Juxtaposeurs visit us this week at Dogwater Studios. The Juxtaposeurs are an ensemble cast of musicans, dancers, performers and tech crews. They have assembled to put on an encore production of The Hazards of Love Tribute Show. Following the inspiration of Assistant Directors Gabe Hilton and Kaitlin Oki, they recreate and stage the narrative told in The Decemberists’ album “The Hazards of Love”. This show was very well received when we first performed it in the Fall of 2010 and we are putting it on again at Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor in just a few weeks.
We? Oh, did I forget to mention that Reverend Rory is in this production? Well he is. An original cast member, along with vocalists Marlene and Music Director Chris Nelson, they are joined by many new talents including vocalist Margy Ford. Jon Cornell steps up and accompanies them although he is not in the production this time around.
The Hazards of Love Tribute Show will be at the Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor Showroom for 7:30 PM shows on Fridays and Saturday 2/7, 2/8 and 2/14 with a Sunday Matinee at 2:30 on 2/9. Music entertainment will follow at the main bar. Tickets for The Hazards of Love Tribute Show, available at Jub Jub’s, Prism Magic, The Melting Pot or cast members, are $12 in advance or $15 at the door and include admission to the after parties.
Finally a shout out to the fine folks at The Generator! They put on a fine pot luck meal for artists and patrons and friends every Wednesday at their facility and are always looking for anyone interested in getting involved. THey are having a bg fundraiser on Saturday 2/15 – Buy It or Burn It! All the pieces up for auction will be voted on to be displayed with pride at the Generator or immolated with delight at the Generator.

This episode features the rockin’ goodness of Reno alt-country troubadours, The Refiners! These gents came in and kicked down the doors of Dogwater Studios. Calling themselves “Waylan through a modern lens”; Bill, Ned and Doug are the real deal. They curse. They drink. They play some damn fine music. We got to hear some country covers and some Refiner originals and it was damn fine.
I’m going to take this time to interrupt the blog post to remind you about the upcoming festivities this weekend at the Marianarchy Winter Formal! With over 40 bands in 2 days, this is easily our biggest Marianarchy yet! A benefit for Nico Theologitis of Nico’s Greek Deli, who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, this Marianarchy Winter Formal is a special one. It is also the first Marianarchy on two stages and a prelude to Marianarchy X, comping this May. (Aaaaannnnnd….. it just happens to be Rev. Rory and Nick Ramirez’s birthday party)
