This week, Rick, Nick and Intern Mouse came in on The Lovers Holiday to catch up and say farewell to one of our absolute favorite Reno bands, Pink Awful. They have announced that key founding members Ashley Costelloe and Mike Miller are engaged to be married and are moving to Chicago. Drummer Chris Croft rounds out the band on their latest and potentially final, double EP “Apophenia”.

Front cover of Pink Awful's Apophenia's double release - one red with white dots in design with sketch of frankenstein and a house, the other white with red dots and hands flying kites
Pink Awful’s double CD: Apophenia

The first cd is red and the second is white. The red one they say is more rocking of the two, more guitars and more like their previous records, and the white one is more moody and electronic. They’re both fantastic, experimental and cinematic. They’d fit in on a lineup like Siouxie and the Banshees, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Le Tigre, Santigold, LCD Soundsystem, Radiohead or Sonic Youth.  If you like any of those bands , I think you’re going to dig them.

They are unique in that they’re the ones who sound like Pink Awful. Influenced by others but totally original and refreshing. We talk a lot about each of the five songs previewed. How they created them sonically, technically, how the lyrics came to be and a little insight into their meaning. The music is so different song to song. Dogwater Dick hooked up the studio so we could experience the songs in stereo, a luxury we don’t always have. I highly recommend listening to the two EP’s back to back on headphones or in the car. Sometimes the sound is enormous and sometimes it’s sub-fi ( a term invented on this episode by Mike to describe their lower than low-fi tunes.). We get the origin story of their name and it’s not what anyone thought!

Mike Miller and Chris Croft

It’s a bittersweet episode and it gets a little emotional. Ashley first joined us in season one, I think, with the duo Sleepy Sunshine, back at the old studio in Sparks. She was there at the Zephyr when Marianarchy was still a new thing. With all that history and all the great music and shows they’ve given Reno, it was hard to hold back some tears.

Join them for the release of Apophenia, and their farewell show, March 4th at The Loving Cup with openers Roxxy Collie. Doors at 8pm Show at 9pm sharp. Bring merch money they’re having a fire sale!

One Million Pounds of Bass – RV aka Motorhome music makes his Worst Little Podcast debut.

Almond Mocha Music is RV, aka Motorhome Music, and Kelly Proud. They describe themselves as fun, exciting, dancey enough to get your feet tapping but still appropriately layers over conversation on a long drive or over a cup of coffee. This new musical journey between these two musicians is a wonderful departure from the norm. Stitch and @motorhomemusic shatter musical expectations with their collaboration, Almond Mocha. Described as “uplifting” and “hopeful music” this step outside of either of their creative norms produces a sound consistently compared to The Postal Service, The Album Leaf and Massive Attack.

Their self titled album “Almond Mocha” will be released in early 2018. Catch Kelly Proud next at the Blue Bird when she opens for former podcast guest and excellent human, Grace Hayes, and Whitney Myer! It’s Kim’s birthday and all she wants for her day is for you to go to this show!

S7 E24

Hello and congrats to Famous Dave’s for being voted best Reno podcast! This week your second favorite and ONLY Worst Little Podcast has cooked up something really special for you. We have Skycats in the studio, FINALLY! Yours truly, Kadillac Kim, has been so excited to showcase them on the podcast that I have hardly been able to contain myself. To say that this duo is talented would be the understatement of the century. Or at least like the last few minutes. I’m very dramatic. Anyway, listen up to hear me fangirl all over them (it gets messy).

But first, something completely different! We have on the phone all the way from Texas, Jordan from Portland band Coastlands. They took a minute out of their busy tour schedule to talk to us about their upcoming show at the Saint (while shooting a music video, for fuck’s sake). We have a short interview and a song we’re previewing for you here in internet land. Coastlands is playing at the Saint Aug 26th with podcast veterans Moons Of Vega and Pink Awful. Listen up to get a taste of the shoegazey goodness. I’ll be sharing the video as soon as I have my hands on it, so keep an eye out for that and be sure to go to the show with us! Or at least me, you know I get around…

But back to Skycats! Skycats is a collaboration between Reno’s own Grace Hayes and Bazooka Zac. Both accomplished musicians in their own rights, together they make magic. Space magic. Or something. You heard Zac’s beats on last week’s podcast when we featured Redfield Clipper. Grace had a viral hit with the Reno Anthem, and while I’m certain she doesn’t want to be known for a silly diddy about her hometown, Reno is certainly grateful to be featured so positively by such a colossal local talent. So thanks, Grace!

Grace Hayes of Reno synthwave duo Skycats smiling for the camera and being photobombed by Bazooka Zac.

Grace Hayes of Skycats

They sum up their bands sound on their Facebook page calling it a dreampop, synthwave, kaleidoscope of sound and color, exploring the space between darkness and light through hauntingly beautiful jazz vocals and rich electronic textures. Accurate.

Bazooka Zac of Reno synthwave duo Skycats smiling into the camera while recording for the Worst Little Podcast in Reno, Nevada.

Bazooka Zac of Skycats

Keep your eyes on Skycats. They’re going places.

Thanks to Grace and Zac for being excellent guests on this week’s podcast!

This week in Reno music, be sure to check out alllllll the things I am about to drop on you. Are you prepared? It’s gonna be heavy…

Make a point to head to the Holland project to check out Between The Lyrics: A Celebration Of Hip Hop. This fundraiser for Holland Reno will feature artwork from over 40 different local artists, live music and delicious food provided by Nom Eats. This year’s theme is Socio-Political lyrics and each artist was given a random verse to work with. The show will be going down Saturday August 19th at 7pm. All artwork will be sold on a first come first serve basis, don’t miss out!!! All ages.

As always, thanks for tuning in and turning up.

Pink Awful – Goes Down Good – S7 E1

Put on your smashin’ shoes!

The Worst Little Podcast – S6 E36 – Download Link

I try not to be jaded, but let’s face it – I’ve been watching bands in bars or basements for 25+ years, most of that in Reno. A lot of bands walk down the same tracks, no? But like All of us I genuinely love NEW music; music that defies generalization and genre, pigeon-holes and styles; music that hits me in the face like a big, wet fish. LAIDEEZ AND GENNELMEN! For our LAST EPISODE OF SEASON 6! I present for your listening enjoyment: PINK AWFUL!

Ashley costelloe, singer for Pink Awful

Ashley

Bernie Paterson, guitar for Pink Awful

Bernie

Pink Awful is an indie-noise-rock band out of Reno NV. It’s a little hard to pin down; they have a lot of obvious and subtle musical influences ranging from – frankly – the 50s to the 90s. With the technical proficiency and musical knowledge of al the members, they can help but be stinkin’ good. Pink Awful is: Ashley Costelloe, Vocals; Mike Miller, Guitar/Vox; Bernie Paterson, Guitar/Vox; Emily Dunster, Bass; Brendan Dalton, Drums. And when I say they are “stinkin’ good”, I mean they are really effing talented with on-point musical proclivities.

Emily Dunster, bass for Pink Awful

Emily

Mike Miller - Guitar and vocals for Pink Awful

Mike

They say they don’t have any shows lined up because – well, listen to the show, and they’ll tell  you. But I think It’s really mostly that the Reno scene just doesn’t know yet – that people don’t KNOW that they NEED to hear this band. Reno, welcome to a new favorite addiction – Pink Awful! hit up that FB page and make them book a show! (maybe May Marianarchy ?!?!?)

Brendan Dalton, drummer for Pink Awful

Brendan

This weekend is the celebration of Marshall Compton’s life at the Morris Burner Hotel. I mean it when I say – life is short and I love you.

Next week is the start of Season & and February First Friday at Foxy Olive with Jeff Done. I hope to see you peoples out and about.

Thanks For Listening.
