Bands not from Reno???? *gasp*

The Worst Little Podcast – S4 E16

So, what do you do when some guys from out of town show up and want to play your show? Put them on a podcast! Enter Daniel G. Harmann and Kye Alfred Hillig. We had a bit of a time crunch this week, but you may remember that we talked to a couple guys on the phone last week. Well, this week, they came even closer and stopped at Dogwater Studios!

Dan Harmann - happy to be here!

Dan Harmann – happy to be here!

On tour for a whirlwind trip including Modesto, Boise and Reno, these two troubadours with a troubled past played a show at St. James Infirmary right after the podcast, like motherfucking rock stars. It’s really a shame that Kye Hillig and Dan Harmann don’t live closer, because we had a great time with them. I almost wish I could talk more shit (about Dan’s big head, or that Kye looks a little bit like Tootsie) but they were really cool guys! I’d love to pick their brain a little longer.

Kye Hillig smiling profusely

Kye Hillig – “Wouldn’t ‘cha like to be my neighbor?”

I would be remiss and usually am  if I didn’t mention the guy who out this all together. Brian Jackson, the man behind the camera, videos, media and booking, reached out to us out of the blue and made this happen. He wouldn’t stop messaging me, even when I tried really hard to ignore him. Thanks to him, I had a great show this week!

Brian Jackson - photographer and media manager from Washington State

Brian Jackson – also happy to be here!

Ok, I’m just making words up now. Time to end this. But one final thing I want to mention is “So Say we All”, a Dance Dance Technoqueer Revolution! This edgy event “aims to explore ideas of identity. Who are we? Where do we belong? Where is our place in the more-than-human community? One of the fundamental questions we ask repeatedly is, “Are you alive?” Using Battlestar Galactica, post-feminist theory, and cyborg analysis as a framework to examine ideas about sex and gender, “So Say We All”challenges us to reconcile with the ‘other’as we pursue our rightful place in the Universe.”

I’m intrigued. Organized by the Great Basin Movement Project and featuring DJ Heidilicious, “So Say We All”  will run this week, May 23-25, at Valley Arts. Check out the event page!

Oh, and Chewie’s back.

Thanks for Listening!

Also in studio is Jenny PezDespencer, talking about her upcoming comedy show at Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor. She will be recording a live album at this show, so it’s going to be a lot of fun! Listen in for the BIG CONTEST to win tickets to this live comedy album recording of Jenny PezDespencer, one of our favorite Reno comics.

We3 also have a brief phone call with next week’s guests, Dan Harmann and Ky Alfred Hillig. Both hail from Washington and will be playing at St. James Infirmary on Monday 5/19, just after coming onto the podcast to record with us! Fun guys on the phone, we can’t wait to hang out and give them the Worst Little Quiz next week – they’ll have no idea (unless they read this. which they won’t.) Take a sec to chekkout their music ans stop by the show!

10 years of LOVE - Marianarchy - May 16 & 17 2014

Finally, lets not forget about this weekend – MARIANARCHY X – Friday, May 16th and Saturday May 17th. 30+ bands in two days! We’ve been raising money for 10 years to help out our Reno family and artists and non-profits, in honor of the late Marianne Psota, with huge support from the community. THis year’s beneficiaries are Keely Davis, a little girl with Down’s Syndrome, and Emily Reese, Reno teacher and personality on the Reno Tahoe Tonight Show on Nevada Matters and Renegade Radio, who was recently diagnosed with cancer after already having beaten it into submission. As we say around Maryanarchy, “Fuck Your Cancer!”, and now “Fuck Your Syndrome” joins the catalogue of Jub-isms. It is going to be another great show this year. Please come out and help us make a difference in someone’s life, once again.

Hey boys and girls! Do you like music? Yes? Do you like punk rock music? Yes? That’s awesome! We just happen  to have a young pop punk band from Reno NV, Fighting the Future, on the show this week! They sing and scream about all the FUN angst and SUPER EXCITING crushing disappointment in their lives!!! Isn’t that just the best?

Dylan Fusion

We had a truly fun time with Dylan Fuson (guitar and vocals), Austin Aguera (guitar and vocals), Craig Schrader (drums) and Rachel Barr (bass and vocals) from Fighting the Future. They have been getting around town for the better part of the year in this lineup and are looking forward to a EP release show coming up on May 2nd.

Why don’tcha sit down and listen to us sometime? It’s a very sexy show in store for you this week – Nicole Rose and Teresa Moiola come by to wile us with their womanly charms. And we let them! Quite happily! As much of a pleasure to talk to as to look at, Nikki and Teresa are starring members of Bohemian Burlesque, the oldest nouveau burlesque troupe in Reno. Innuendo is the name of the game… and sounds like buttsex, so, yeah! Win!

Teresa Moiola of Bohemian Burlesque with a generous chest

The seductive Teresa and her… sparkling personality.

Nikki is also going to be the emcee of the upcoming Bohemian Burlesque show, Femme Fatale, on APril 25th and 26th at The Studio on Fourth. As a ‘teaser’, she sings “Special” from Avenue Q, an adults-only Sesame Street-style musical. It…. made the Reverend’s pants too tight room very warm.

Speaking of Music, we also feature some tracks from Daryl Lee Thompson, a long-time Reno musician now living in Portland and touring the Pacific Northwest on a regular basis. Daryl Lee is OOOOOOOooode Skoool Reno and collectively one of our favorite musicians, hands down. However, an enormous portion of the show is devoted to Uncle Rickey’s Story Time! Wherupon, Dogwater Dick claims to have found a glory hole near the top of Rattlesnake Mountain. Reverend Rory went along with it, because he trust Dogwater Dick, even when he lies, but after seeing the picture – isn’t too sure.  Judge for yourself. Reverend Rory predicts we will spend an inordinate amount of time next week discussing this.

Auf Wiedersehen and goodbye…

The Worst Little Podcast – Download Link – S4 E8

It is with heavy heart that I write to you this week. At first I was all like “Hell yeah! Hella Acapella is on the show!!!” But then I was all like “Awwww…It’s the last Hella Acapella show (featuring our good friend Chas Dawes)”. Yes, it’s true, bass singer and LMT, Chas Dawes is leaving fair Reno, NV for the happier shores of Hawaii – where he is getting hooked up like a mofo! We are sad to see him go, but happy for his good fortune.

Chas Dawes of Hella Acapella
We spend a lot of time talking about the previous week’s Chazapalooza at Jub Jub’s where the whole gang came out to say goodbye. It was one hell of a party with lots of great performances and some surprise performers! Hella Acapella had a GREAT set and left an indelible memory on everyone there, just like the way Chas has with everyone whose life he has graced.

Diana Ekins of Hella Acapella

I’d also like to take a brief moment to congratulate Mrs. and Mr. Jessica and Todd Imus who were joined in wedlock this weekend by none other than Rev. Rory Dowd himself. It was a very special day to be a part of and he was honored to have been included. May their marriage last as long as, like, forever and shit.

Nick Ramirez of Hella Acapella

While I’m here – another quick plug for Reno open mics. There is one just about every day of the week – you have no idea of how lucky we are in that. One of the newest is going through a bit of a change. Starting Tuesday, April 1 (not a joke) Foxy Olive will be host to “Trashtalk and Trashrock” – an evening of poetry and rekkids. Sign ups start at 7, spoken word starts at 8 and garage rock and roll starts at 10. Hosted by Thee Reverend Rory Dowd and a cast of other fun performers, it’s going to change the face of Tuesdays in Reno!

Valorie Tyler of Hella Acapella

So, that’s the cue for my line:
I’ve got nothin’ else. Thanks for listening!

Back from the beginning! Aversion Therapy returns to the show after the mildly WILDLY successful release of their latest CD, Snake Oil.  In addition to the regular yokels of Evan Humphries, Henry King and Bruce Gonyea, we get to meet new lead guitar, Denis “The Replacement” Phares! He’ll do, as long as he doesn’t fuck up.

Evan Humphries on the Worst Little Podcast

If you haven’t caught them before, Aversion Therapy is a punk rock/spoof rock band from Reno NV. They are friends of the show and early patrons of the Dogwater Studios! They leave a legacy of witty lyrics and socio-local commentary in their wake. THis week, they play a bunch of their new tracks from the album.

Denis Phares of Aversion Therapy on the Worst Little Podcast

blah blah blah Aversion Therapy is cool blah blah blah gay joke here blah blah blah no one ever reads this far anyway (and if you are – comment on facebook or the web-page dammit. I’ll read your comments about Aversion Therapy or The Worst Little Podcast on the show next week)

Welcome aboard Worst Little Airlines. Just sit back, relax and trust your fine pilots for the smoothest podcast you’ve ever heard… Now that you’re finished laughing, please enjoy the in-flight entertainment!

Lily Baran of Hella Fitzgerals and the Tahoe Players

The fabulous, Lily Baran

We bring you Hella Fitzgerald! Songbird Lily Baran and ivory tickler Tristan Selzler throw down a little session at the studio this week. Performing intermittently around town for the last few years, Hella Fitzgerald is a Reno jazz combo that coalesces out of strains of melodies in the air whenever they are needed.

Tristan Selzler of Hella Fitzgerald

The piano man, Tristan Selzler

These fine performers flip Dogwater Dick’s lid – you can nearly hear him peeing his pants after their first song. They throw down a selection of jazz standards and modern transpositions, a little change of pace for us. Once again -WLP bringing you exciting new content every week!

In addition to Hella Fitzgerald, Baran and Selzler are busy folk. Selzler sits in and regularly performs at clubs and bars around Reno with different jazz combos. Baran is a major part of the operations at Tahoe Players, a performing arts facility for young people in Incline Village that regularly entertains audiences around the Reno/Tahoe area.

Also – go visit Reno Computer Fix. Cause I said so.

Gimme some good stuff!

The Worst Little Podcast – Download Link – 2014 02 03

We always strive to mix it up on the show, keep you on your toes. This week, we’ve got BLC Clothing in the studio! Shawn Harroun and Mike Weber are the brains and the brawn (not respectively) behind the Reno-based clothing line. In operation for just over a year, BLC clothing designs and sells lines of hoodies, men’s and women’s T-shirts, stickers and sexy, sexy underwear. Custom work is up their alley too.

Harroun and Weber also have their fingers in a bunch of pots, not just BLC Clothing. Weber is also a muckety-muck over at Weber Graphics, a family owned screen printing company in Reno/Sparks. Harroun, in addition to hawking T-shirts, slings drinks down at Third Street bar and has been known to spin a turntable or two. We have a lot of fun chatting with them around the table, and even have a spirited edition of The Worst Little Quiz.

Shawn Harroun of BLC Clothing on the Worst Little Podcast

Weber also plays in Death By Society, a Reno-based band. Unfortunately, his band mates could not make it. So it all came down to Harroun, who came through with some beats composed by friends of his. Oh, yeah – there’s the kicker: we got DJ music this week, for all the EDM fans in internetland. Check out the tasty treats from dBot, Miss Haynes and 6Blocc throughout the show.

Mike Weber of BLC Clothing on the Worst Little Podcast

Thanks again to BLC Clothing for being on the show.

One last reminder – A Tribute to “The Hazards of Love” opens at Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor this weekend, February 7-9 & 14. It’s a whole new world!

The Worst Little Podcast – Download Link – S4 E1

It’s the first show of a brand new season! It has been a giant blast to have been with you all for the last three years and we hope you stay with us for many more!

This week’s lineup is more random than usual. First up, our musical guest, Glynn Osburn. At first glance, he’s a typical Reno skate punk, but Glynn runs much deeper than that. Having been brought up on the teat of Reno music, Glynn has himself entered into the ring and brings powerful vocals and killer music writing. He’s been making the rounds at a lot of open mics in 2013, so I don’t think it’s going to be much longer before we see this guy in a band.

Glynn Osburn on the Worst Little Podcast

Additionally, we have visiting with us Hanna Rodgers, owner of Centurian publishing. Centurian iteslf is an adult erotica catalogue that has been in business (including “male” order) since the 1960s. The publishing company however also puts out a number of fetish or BDSM magazines including titles like Forced Womanhood (submitted males), Enslaved Sissies (submitted males) and Transformations (transgendered). She talks about her publishing company and a little about the fetish scene, but mainly she came in to support our final guest…

Hanna Rodgers on the Worst Little Podcast in the World

Xelena! Empress of the Impossible! Xelena is professional mentalist here in Reno, divining your thoughts from the mysteries of the cosmos in some ineffable way that will mystify and mesmerize your mind! She set up a trick with The Rev at the open mic last week and this was the conclusion of that. Batting 1.000 on the show, Xelena proceeds to pluck the answers to puzzles out of seemingly thin air! Additionally, she sealed a Superbowl sports book ticket in an envelope and gave it to Reverend Rory in anticipation of this week’s big game. The reveal is going to be at the open mic night on 2/3 – you should show up to check it out.

Xelena, Mistress of the Impossible, on The Worst Little Podcast

Additionally Xelena has a show coming up on February 16 – a Gallery of Mystery and Fetish at the Wildflower Village, featuring Mental Mysteries, Erotic Art, and Gender-Bending Humor, Some of the art samples will be out of Hanna Rodger’s personal and extensive collection.

That’s all for now.

…of Season 3!!!

Jill Marlene From The Hazards of Love Tribute Show
The Juxtaposeurs visit us this week at Dogwater Studios. The Juxtaposeurs are an ensemble cast of musicans, dancers, performers and tech crews. They have assembled to put on an encore production of The Hazards of Love Tribute Show. Following the inspiration of Assistant Directors Gabe Hilton and Kaitlin Oki, they recreate and stage the narrative told in The Decemberists’ album “The Hazards of Love”. This show was very well received when we first performed it in the Fall of 2010 and we are putting it on again at Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor in just a few weeks.

Chris Nelson from the Hazards of Love Tribute

We? Oh, did I forget to mention that Reverend Rory is in this production? Well he is. An original cast member, along with vocalists Marlene and Music Director Chris Nelson, they are joined by many new talents including vocalist Margy Ford. Jon Cornell steps up and accompanies them although he is not in the production this time around.

Margy Ford from The Hazards of Love Tribute Show

The Hazards of Love Tribute Show will be at the Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor Showroom for 7:30 PM shows on Fridays and Saturday 2/7, 2/8 and 2/14 with a Sunday Matinee at 2:30 on 2/9. Music entertainment will follow at the main bar. Tickets for The Hazards of Love Tribute Show, available at Jub Jub’s, Prism Magic, The Melting Pot or cast members, are $12 in advance or $15 at the door and include admission to the after parties.

Finally a shout out to the fine folks at The Generator! They put on a fine pot luck meal for artists and patrons and friends every Wednesday at their facility and are always looking for anyone interested in getting involved. THey are having a bg fundraiser on Saturday 2/15 – Buy It or Burn It! All the pieces up for auction will be voted on to be displayed with pride at the Generator or immolated with delight at the Generator.

Back on Track for the new season next week!

Thanks for listening.
