I could talk to this woman all damn day.

Hey, friends! It’s good to see you again! Whether you are at work, at home, Portland or Zanzibar, I hope you’re ready for some face-melting fabulousness. DJ Heidilicious came by to stomp on the studio this week and knows how to party, bringing her signature box o’ Franzia with her and getting us a little wine buzzy. She’s been really active in the Reno EDM scene this last year,  playing clubs, promoting friends and organizing shows. Heidilicious is down for the scene and thinks it’s time for the scene to get down. We’ve never had a DJ like her on before and it was fun to watch her work.

thrown’ beats down like a cop

DJ Heidilicious is also a part of the Reno Sound Collective, a group of local DJs  that are putting on shows together sometimes at your club or other times at the house down the street. I personally really enjoyed watching them on Ustream a few weeks ago when I was at home doing laundry and housecleaning. To borrow a phrase from the 80s and 90s, it was some dope-ass shit. Heidilicious gives us a few tastes of the sonic goodness – a teaser, if you will. Her beets will trickle right down to your feets, shakin’ those hips on the way down.

Intern and Franzia in Blue

From the gang, Rick Nick and Rory all talk about their weekends (although Rick’s weekend is EASILY the best story). As usual, they scope out the coming weekend for you with some of their picks of shows to see. DJ Heidilicious also has some upcoming shows, so please support some local music and check her ass out. It’s a nice one. We aren’t afraid of the beats and neither should you be  – get out ans see something different, hang out with people you don’t know – it could be fun.

She likes the wine…

Michelle Coleman "I like kittehs!"

There’s a whole set of awesome young musicians in Reno. We’ve talked to some of them on here before. Scarlet Presence is definitely one of them. These rock and roll rippers sat in with us with the full setup and shreddecd out some great tracks for us. Singer and Guitar-er, Michelle Coleman; Drummer, Carter Stellon; and future pizza delivery guy Bassist, Jonesy Pelsue invaded the Dogwater Studios this week to kill it for us. Michelle has got some powerful pipes and plays guitar like she was born with one in her hands. The boys round out the rythm quite nicely – but let’s face it, it’s all about her.

Carter Stellon "Yeah... I know. I rule."

Besides the awesome that is Scarlet Presence, we also had some great phone interviews this week. First up is Rev. Rory’s long-time and very good friend Lucio “Reverend Screamin’ Fingers” Menegon. Lucio moved out to NYC from the Bay Area some time ago and is back for a West Coast Wake up call. He’ll be performing at Reno Art Works this Saturday for a night of music, noise and art. Also on the show is comedian Justin Russell who will be appearing at the Pioneer Underground Comedy Club all weekend long. The call with him could have gone better, but we had some severe lag issues.

Jonesy Pelsue "I love lamp."

Lots of good shows coming up this month – including Scalet Presence at the alley on the 18th, and Strega on the 20th. Also want to mention the Rocky Horror show at CommRow on Friday the 26th – featuring live music by Pinky Polanski and emceed by Reverend Rory AND the Nowhere Nevada fundraiser on Saturday the 27th. It’s October – one of the best show and pary months all year, so stay tuned!

The Worst Little Podcast – 2012 09 24 (Part 2)

Alan Flipside

Alan Flipside

To recap -Tom Gordon, Dr. D, Alan, Axe Trax, Imirage. Nick got to drive the car this week cause I’m a jerk and cut out on a lot of cool songs and conversation. I’m sure there were a lot of nerdgasm moments talking about different microphones and sound boards and knob turning. Wooooo….. The wind would have been useful …..

Axe Trax and Imirage helped set the stage for a lot of other studios that have come and gone in the interim, giving crappy little studios like us something to shoot for. It’s overlooked how much good sound engineers and audio producers contribute to live shows and recording. Dogwater Dick, Tom, Dr. D, Alan and LOTS of unsung heroes of music quietly sit at the lighted desk and make it happen, make it possible for prima-donnas like Nick and myself to do what we do. So, a sincere “Get back to work!” “Thank you,” is in order..

Tom and Nick still love you, even it they’re really aliens.

Ok – that’s really it. Now I need to listen to some 3 hours of podcast – to make sure The Intern didn’t fuck up!

Thanks for listening!

Listen up! This is some serious shit!

The Worst Little Podcast – 2012 09 24 (Part 1)

Tom and Nick love you.

So, we’ve talked about it and teased it since last year when we had him on, but it’s finally here: The Second Coming of Tom Gordon. And this time he brought friends and more music! Not just other music, but literally MORE tracks that are a part of the music and entertainment legacy of Reno. Specifically from Axe Trax Studios and Imirage Sound Lab. Joining him are Dr. Davis and Alan from Imiage. Dr. D is a pioneer of recording music in Reno, being a part of the first recording studios in Reno in the late 1970s and early 1980s. To hear him tell it, it wasn’t far off from wax cylinders and telegraph wires. As a musician and sound wizard, Dr. D has helped build the local recording industry, working with national acts and local bands alike. Alan… well, I dunno. I had to leave early and he didn’t get much of a chance to get a word in before I left. But he seemed really nice. I’d totally introduce him to my mom. (Not really, but that sounds nice doesn’t it.)

Kaysolike I was sayin’, Tom brought a lot of great songs from both  Axe Trax and Imirage spanning 30 years. This weekend, 9/29/2012, is the 30th Anniversary of the studio and they brought an enormous amount of  audio including Lee Greenwoond, Diana Ross, Lionel Ritchie and local music heroes, Cranium. Now – they brought all of this, but I wasn’t there, like I said. (I had to get down to the Blazing Mic at Jub Jub’s) I don’t know how much they played or what exactly, but the list is tremendous. I know they went for the full three hours again. And once again, we had to split the audio into two separate podcasts!

No really, Alan’s cool.

So, keep listening and we’ll pick this up on the flipside…..

Christy Lynn!

As we enjoy the dregs of summer, we also get to enjoy the dregs of Gerlach! Our friends Christy Lynn and Lacy Webb of ALtered Ego were finally able to get some time to come back into the city before they head out to California for the fall. Christy Lynn was on the show about a year ago, but since then, she has teamed up with Lacy to become one of the most powerful duets in town. You can hear how they met at an open mic right at the top of the show – we just jump right into it this week. We were supposed to have them in a while back, but we had to cancel it on account of Burning Man. Luckily, they were able to pinch hit for another guest who couldn’t make it this week! Thanks again, ladies!

Lacy Webb!

We were also joined by Sean Ralls of the People In Cities (P.I.C.) Project. Brainchild of Lindsey Lawson, Reno resident and UNR student, the P.I.C. Project is ateempting to document the stories and efforts of individuals all across the country, to getting the word out and sharing their inspirations. It’s a pretty cool thing that they are doing and you should check it out. Sean was following ALtered Ego around when we made this happy connection. We’ll be doing more with them in the future, so keep on the lookout!

Sean Ralls!

Also – the new phonebooks are here! The new phonebooks are here!
No, not really (and who uses a phonebook these days anymore anyway), but the INTERN IS HERE! That’s right, we have a temporary addition to our podcast family – Spencer Kilpatrick. He taking a class at UNR with ‘Too Tall’ Tom Gordon and was unlucky enough to draw ‘Dogwater Studios’ out of the hat for his semester internship. He hasn’t screwed up too much yet, but he’s only been here for a week. We’ll put him in the hot seat and give him the Quiz one of these weeks, maybe even let him talk. Welcome, Spencer – this is the last time I’ll be nice to you!

He doesn’t deserve a name yet.

Well that’s it. Get out of here. Listen to the show!
And thanks for listening!

It all started so normally at first…

The Handburger Man

This week gets a little crazy. Rory forgot his phone, Nick left early and things get extra NSFW. But of course they do: Kevin Dunn stopped by. One of the foulest songwriters in town Kevin has verbally vomited for tons of Reno bands including Dump Your Boyfriends, Courtesy Stitch, STM and a brief but exciting career as a rapper. We’ve got his ‘version’ of The Rainbow Connection with MC P-Hole on the episode and let me tell you – I don’t remember Kermit saying a damn one of those lyrics! Childhood memories ruined….

That’s not a peace sign, Officer Krupke.

Also in the studio is Dan Steinmetz, a long-time drummer on the Reno scene who is currently herding Kevin drumming for STM. He brings the rock and the solid. We unfortunately didn’t get to talk to Dan as much as we wanted – Kevin had a lot to say. There may have been some shit talking going on… Especially after the bottle of citrus vodka he cradled like a baby.

We did miss an opportunity to talk to a mover and shaker though – there was supposed to be a phoner with DJ Heidilicious, but someone forgot his phone. We’ll have Heidi on in about a month, but until then, here’s a ‘short list of her upcoming shows:

  • Thurs 9/13- Live streaming of a DJ collective called Reno Sound Collective – https://www.facebook.com/events/108418002644167/
  • Fri 9/14- Crystal Bay Club, Tahoe, Late Night w Roksmyth
  • Sat 9/15- Reno ArtBeat at the new Salvagery on Wrondel- fundraiser for Future Kind, local charity futurekind.org- provides underprivileged communities around the world help with educational resources. BBQ and local music showcase of interesting local bands, and also educating the community some conscious and cultural styles of electronic music. meet and greet for the artists, etc. will be showing films various types of music and have local art as well. AND full plate of food!
  • 9/21- play at HOME at the new Rise nightclub downtown
  • 9/22- 90s party at Seven in West Street Market- games, costume contests etc

Oh – and we didn’t talk about it on the show, but right before, during the ‘preshow’, we found a dead mouse in the backyard. Rory sat down near it and must have bumped it because when we looked it was moving a lot and then about 15 maggots came swarming out. There are only 3 in the picture, but there were lots more that ran. SOOOOO fucking creepy!

Enjoy!
And thanks for listening!

Worst Little Podcast – S2 E26

It’s that time of year again – Dust Season. Welcome back, Burners.

Spike McGuire: HEY, YOU GUUUUUUUUYS!!!!!

We were supposed to have this new kick-ass band for you this week, but they’ve already lost a drummer, so instead we just got a lead singer: Mr. Spike McGuire! Spike’s been on the show before and is a busy man around town. He heads up the monthly Loud As Folk series at The Alley in Sparks and is generally playing music somewhere on any given week. He regales us with some tales of Chicago, music, anarchy and sex bets. That’s right sex bets. Just ask Aric Shapiro! (who is a huge… pimp, btw, ladies). Spike also brought along a friend of his, a bona-fide actor from LA that we like to call Hollywood Brad!

Hollywood Brad: He’s just like a Ken doll, except anatomically correct and not made of plastic.

At first, it seemed as if the show was a little weak and directionless (Rory hadn’t been drinking much yet). But once Hollywood Brad got a 6-pack under his 6-pack, the stories started rolling on ot. One of the LONGEST Worst Little Quizzes ever ebcause of that. But it’s all good – a really good quiz. You can hear them jockeying for positions in Rick’s bed . Naughty boys. Rory also pans a touring act that he caught next week and Nick of course has details about a bunch of shows he’s paying in. What is this? Some kind of personal aggrandizement center? Oh, wait…

Anyway, thanks for listening!

I’m late! The White Rabbit died.

Worst Little Podcast – Download Link – S2 E26

Hey everybody –  sorry about the late post this week. Super busy with the first week of school for The Rockstar Girl and stopping by the hospital to see Her Stitch-lyness. Kinda dropped the ball on this week. Will you forgive me? No? Dick. Fun and fantastic episode this week and totally NOT awkward at all when interviewing my ex, Cheyenne Leigh, about her new business. Abridged Works. She makes hand=crafted jewelry, purses and hair thingys out of old books that were going to the recycle bin. Lots of fun – unique and cool. Someday, it’ll even start paying the bills for her. Someday…

Also, we got big, bad Brian Sutherland, Executive Producer for Nowhere Nevada to come in and pimp the movie a little bit. Just a little. Really, we couldn’t get back to him because Cheyenne kept flapping her gums. As a tribute, we peppered the movie with a bunch of songs used in the soundtrack for Nowhere Nevada. Very sweet stuff. Lots of great tracks. Check out the website and watch the movie trailer. It looks better than we thought it would!

“Dorks. They look like a couple of dorks.”

OK, I wanna wrap this up so you can listen to the show finally.
Thanks for listening.

Lies and mendacity!!!!

Worst Little Podcast – Download Link – S2 E25

First, I’m on the defensive. I want to clear something up – I did not call in well! Rick was trying to call in sick and we had a last-minute cancellation, so I rearranged my life. Then Nick calls and says we’re still doing the show. Bitches be trippin! I was fully prepared to do the show this week, SERIOUSLY! Then life happened… and I hung out with my kid and learned a song on the GEEtar – sue me. OK, enough rationalization and onto the show.

Felix says: “Arrrr… You’re number one!”

In addition to the regular weekend recap, we find out that Chewie has a stalker in his neighborhood, cabs will not stop to pick up Felix, Nick is temporarily hooked on Vicodin and Rick sat around the house and polished his… microphone, all alone. Fun and exciting! Shocker alert – Felix got really drunk and blacked out last weekend after a show!! Wow! It’s a fun show, despite being sans Reverend. Chewie busts out some old tracks from the Vault and we get to hear a little music from Reno greats Cranium, M.C. Gob, The Line, and War Maggots.

Chewie gases stoically while Felix tries to light the studio on fire or something…

Lots of great stuff happening around town this week. Thursday night, Melvin Makes Machineguns are headlining the Summer Music Series at the Alley. Friday night we’ve got Boot to the Kool , Merkin, The Kanes, Miracle Drugs, and The Firebombing at The Knit; Antique Scream, The Shames, and Walk of Shame at Lincoln Lounge; and Black Sheep of Kali, Glacier and The Harvest and The Hunt at Shea’s. Saturday you can find CRUSH and Smiley Mikey at Sidelines; and the Blitzkreig Pop dance party with DJ Endif and Hyperkarma at The Biggest Little City Club.

Nick with some love for the LIcker.

Don’t forget to come on out to support your open mics all across the city EVERY night of the week. I of course am going to remind you of the Strega Sunday night Open Mic and THE WORST LITTLE OPEN MIC IN RENO at Jub Jub’s on Monday, brought to you by US here at WLP. THis week’s host is the Madman, Matty Waage… and as always, Nick and Rory and Chewie will all be in attendance for some amount of time.

Anyway, thanks for listening!

Nothing hotter than the Sofa King Miserable Heat Wave, amiright?

Worst Little Podcast – Download Link – S2 E24

Wasn’t sure what to expect when I booked Paul Allen on the show this week.  I mean, I knew he was a good musician and quirky lyricist – I liked that about him – but, the dude, like, only ever plays in living rooms and porches, right?!?!  I wasn’t sure if Paulie was up to it, frankly.  He might have frozen up or even peed a little in the studio.  Then Rick would have had to rub his nose in it, whilst bellowing, “NOOO!!!!”  (Yeah, I just said “whilst”. Is there a problem? (Other than my blatant aggression and latent personality split?))  I am happy to say though, Paul came through and really knocked our socks off.  He only froze up during the Worst Little Quiz, but still got a respectable score and beat himself silly.

Lots of great stuff happened in Reno, lots of great stuff coming up – I think we talked about a lot of it during the show.  I’m pretty sure we did, but it’s kind of a blur – and I was sober this week!  The Notorious R.A.D. is back in Reno and will be cutting up some new drops in the studio soon (that means to record funny things, it is NOT a euphemism for drug use – what do you think we are, Californians?).  We had a lot of fun on this episode, and only got a little bit gross. That happens in our  new segment – Dogwater Dick’s Disgisting Definitions.  It’s really, well, not good, but funny as hell.

Please don’t forget to come out and see the live show!  What live show?  The Worst Little Open Mic in Reno, that live show!  Every Monday, Nick Chewie and Rev. Rory will be down at ye olde Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor hosting the open mic.  We want to see new faces, people jamming, people bringing their new songs, new bands, parts of old bands – we even have a drum kit and bass rig set up every week for anyone to come down and borrow.  We’ve had a great couple weeks so far, and want to keep it up.  Even if you can’t come every week, please still stop by every once in a while.  (NEW BANDS: this is really kindof optimal exposure and a chance to play for a live audience; don’t be dumb.)

Anyways, thanks for listening!
