Local underground media mogul Oliver Ex joins us in the studio today. If you don’t know who Oliver is, you should. He is an on-air personality, event producer and his big current project is as the managing editor of Reno Tahoe Tonight. RTT is a 3 year old independent magazine devoted to the “other side” of Reno. (You may remember that they covered WLP back in Oct 2011 – just more proof that they will write about anything.) Oliver was a lot of fun to talk to and jumped right into the shallow end of the gene pool with us. He is a sincere and driven dreamer who has fallen in love with the arts community of this town, and rightly so!
Chewie is back this week and busts out some tunes from the vault. We have three tracks from some pedigreed and storied Reno bands that we think you’ll enjoy. Second hand Jive, Dump Your Boyfriends and Werm are all risen from the dead on this episode. Good stuff.
Anyway, that’s all I have this week. Thanks for listening.
P.S. – Rintoo, the Demon Swamp Kitteh, had to be put down last night, 3/21, due to injuries sustained by a run-in with a car. The Dowds are going to miss her a lot. She was a really fucking good cat.
We finally fucking got them!!!!!
…and they are fucking rad.
Before I get into the show, we do want to take a moment to remember Rev. Gary Setzer, a dynamic piece of the Reno Music scene for many years. His battle with throat cancer came to an end on March 7 and a hole appeared in our lives. There will be a memorial for Gary on Sunday March 27 at Jon A’s Nugget. Details can be found on his Facebook page (follow the hyperlink). Marianarchy 2012 will also be a benefit for his surviving family. Make sure you come out and dig deep to take care of our own. Now back to the show!
Memory Motel is Chris ‘CJ’ Gibson (Guitar, Lead Vocals, Banjo, Cello), Sam Ashlock (Bass, Synth, Charango, Vocals, Soul) and Ben Ashlock (Drums). I first saw these guys at the Reno Block party at Wingfield Park last summer. Their music was pretty phenomenal – all over the road, sincere, tight and great execution. Then, at the end of the set, CJ smashed his fucking guitar. For real. On stage. Cut his hand open and was bleeding. I thought to myself – Who does that?? I also thought – I NEED them on the podcast. It only took 9 months, but here we finally are. Chris did NOT smash a guitar on the episode
mostly because Rick vetoed it on account of all his expensive mics but we still have a lot of fun.
As we like to track our ‘firsts’, this is the first time we have had an underage band on the show. That’s right – none of these boys are even old enough to get a drink. Ben is barely old enough to drive a car!!! We hope we didn’t make them say anything that is going to get them in too much trouble with their parents, teachers, prospective girlfriends, doctors, police or tax collector. And if we did – so what – welcome to the “rock and troll” lifestyle. boys!!! Really though, do NOT let their age deceive you, these are three of the hottest young musical talents in town. Memory Motel is one of the most complicated and excellent bands in Reno right now. Check out their next gig at The Studio on 4th on March 24th. Hell, check out their Kickstarter.com project to do a vinyl 7″!
I also want to wish a very belated birthday to Webmaster Burks! Happy 30-something, faggot! We couldn’t do this without your help maintaining it all!
And a big TANKS to our newest production assistant, Irma Geddon! She is helping Dogwater Dick behind the scenes as well.
Thanks for Listening!
The Best of the Worst Little Podcast – from Kung Fu Sophie and Mark Earnest to The Gunner’s Daughter and Rigorous Proof (who already have a new name… again…).
Hello my friends! As you will shortly find out, Rick needed a vacation so he left us high and dry. But rather than bone you with another week of nothing, we’re offering a taste of the best live performances on our first season. Chewie picked most of these out – there is a reason he is our musical archivist and historian; the man has great taste! Artists on this episode include Kung Fu Sophie, Tom Plunkett, Aversion Therapy, Grace, Mark Earnest, Spike and Jackson, Georgia Mowers, Present, The Firebombing, Del Mar, The Gunner’s Daughter, Big Remote and Rigorous Proof. Whew!
It’s a good year and this is a good episode, cutting out all the bullshit and talking and my un-funniness. I hope you enjoy!
Thanks for listening!
P.S. The cat came home!!!!
The Worst Little Podcast in the World, Season 2 Episode 4 featuring the power-pop stylings Caramello, Ju Ju Bee, Kit Kat, Bit o’ Honey and Pixie Stix of Candyshoppe!
In a world, very much like our own….
…faces are changed to protect the names (and pride) of the innocent.
Welcome back! It’s been a long week, I know. My cat disappeared, it’s been storming and snowing in the mountains and OH MY GAWD DID YOU WATCH OSCARS????? (I didn’t…) But who cares about that – it’s time for your escape into our world! It’s a world of sweet sweet pop this week with Candyshoppe in studio!!! Candyshoppe is Bit O’Honey, Kit Katt (top), Pixy Stix (center), Cara Mello and Juju Bee (bottom). They are here to kick ass and chew bubble gum – and they brought some of both for you! Rick spent a long time dialing in their sound –
like seriously, prima donna, we’re on a timeline! and we think it sounds just great. This show is, in fact, the very first recording of Candyshoppe not done on a tape casette.
That is my cat. She is missing. The Dowds are sad.
I was really suprised that nobody made any jokes about me missing my pussy.
But back to the band: You can check them out on facebook and youtube. If’n you want to see them live they have two upcoming shows that they are really excited about. The first one is going to be THIS FRIDAY 3/2 at the Foxy Olive for First Friday with Eric Foreman. That should be a great time, if probably pretty crowded. The second show coming up is a pretty interesting match. They will be appearing at the Alley in Sparks with The God-des and SHE from Austin, Texas on April 10th. They will probably have some more shows soon as their dance card is filling quickly.
Finally, Nick gives us all a sneak peek at the upcoming Marianarchy set lists. It’s gonna be a great show this year, with a probably return of BOTH Gunshot Likker and Phat Couch! Worth putting down the bong and going outside for, eh?
Have a great week everybody!!!! And Thanks for Listening!
